Hi Everyone,

I'm a long time music-maker and after spending most of my money on that type of gear I'm now looking to get into the other side of the equation (listening).

So far I've purchased a NAD C340 and a Grant Fidelity Tube DAC 09.

I'd like some suggestions for speakers to pair with the integrated amplifier. I'd like to get bookshelf rather than standing but it's not an absolute requirement.

It will be for a room about 10 feet across.

I listen to a large variety of music such as The Clash, Joy Division, Gil Scott Heron, The National, Portishead and lots of electronic/hip hop as well so do appreciate some nice solid bass reproduction.

So far I'm considering the B&W 600 series or PSB Image 2B.

Any specific suggestions would be welcome. Willing to spend between $400-$1000.

Thanks.

I guess the big question is " what do you like to listen to? ". A trip to q-lectronics and Sound Hounds might be in order.

I just took my friend auditioning bookshelf speakers at the low end of your price scale last week. He got to listen to a lot and did end up getting a pair at one of the stores. The staff at both were very nice to us.

I run these with my B system kit, an all NAD system (C540 cdp, C370 integrated, C422 tuner with VDH ICs and ATLAS cables)

Take a look at Monitor Audio's RX1 or RS1 (discontinued). I have the RS1s matched with a Nad C 352 and GF Dac-11 in a similar sized room to yours and I like their sound.

Might not hurt to have a listen to these locally. Low end of your price range and local.

These also just posted. Most people like them including me, although, I haven't heard this version. Probably want a sub with them though.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Just noticed the Monitor Audio MA/800 as well. Perhaps a field trip is in order.

I'll look into reviews of the others mentioned. I was going to take a trip to SoundHounds as well. That's probably the first things to do.

Hrm... can't find any reviews on the Monitor Audio MA/800.

One of the best speakers I've ever heard paired with a Nad integrated is the Quad 12L.

Sounds like fun but I don't have the equipment to do that.

Another added to the list.

I think I'm also considering floor standers now...

Did you get a chance to go to either of the stores yet? There were a nice pair of Castles at Sound Hounds not too long ago.

If you are interested in hearing my DIY speakers please send me a PM. I also have a couple of other pairs that I use in my bedroom system that might help you narrow down the sound you are looking for. I have similar musical tastes to you so I most likely have something that you know to hear.

It is at least worth talking to Dave from Planet 10. I was lucky enough to go over to his house for the Vancouver Island DIY audiofest this summer. He and his wife are extremely nice people and he has many awesome pairs of speakers to listen to. His workshop is unbelievable!

Those all look really interesting and definitely a fun project to try. I'm sending you a PM.

I'm interested to hear the Rega R3. I did go to SoundHounds and he suggested a few from the B&W line. I didn't see any Castles there this weekend although I may have missed them. I'd rather purchased used and considering I will require stands for the 685's, it may be worth it to find a quality pair of used floorstanders instead...

*Apparently I can't send a PM because my account is too new. I'd be happy to check your speakers out. If you send me a PM hopefully I can reply.
