Hey Guys,

So finally moving out of my parents house into a condo with in a couple of months and i'll be needing some speakers on a budget.

My situation. Condo will be 400-500 sq. bachelor. Assuming neighbours who don't like loud bass. Budget $1000-1400 for 5.0 speaker set. No sub because I wont be able to use it, and it'll put me way passed my budget for now. I can always get a sub after. Also with a smaller condo depending on what I get i might not have that much space for huge speakers. My thoughts:

Fronts: Monitor 7's
Rears: Atoms
Center CC190
All powered by Pioneer elite VSX-21TXH (not included in the price)

Used for 50% blu ray movies + 50% music (electronica, IDM, triphop). Mainly looking for accurate clear sound not just LOUD. Also a speaker set that can still output bass without dying(dont need it to shake the condo just hear it when I want to).

What do you guys think? Anything worth upgrade a small bit for a bigger boost? Does PSB have a better setup for the price? I know the Monitor 7's and Atoms are tiny but still out decent sound so take up less space

Thanks in advance,

6 Pairs of Paradigm, 1 pair of PSB. I prefer the PSB.

That being said it is up to you and what you like, I was just showing the guy a good deal since he mentioned PSB in his post.

I wouldn't mind buying used. Is that significantly better than the paradigms im looking at now?

It's just a matter of taste...having owned many models from both companies I prefer the Paradigm but those used PSB's would be perfect for your bachelor!

PS Would you consider going for stereo instead of 5.1? You could go up a notch in quality for the same price.

To each his own reality. It is like saying Enzo Ferrari built cars or something...

The paradigms are great speakers for the money, and, having owned both paradigm and psb speakers, I would suggest you look for a pair of boston acoustics a70s or a100s. For me they are the best I've heard for the money.
No matter what if you are anything like most of the people here, whatever you buy will just be the first of many!

What would you recommend? If i did i'd like to be able to upgrade to to 5.0 relatively fast (being I could get matching sets that aren't as expensive as the 2 fronts)

I own Paradigm speakers, I used own monitors. I haven't owned PSB, but I demoed before, but if I had to choose between the two, I'll go with Paradigm. I just found PSB not so exciting to listen to..

My 2 cents - and strictly my opinion - if your neighbours don't like to hear what your playing, especially bass, Paradigm would not be an option. My old neighbour loved to play Michael Jackson everyday, and he loved his Paradigms. :P
I've owned many pairs over the years, and don't miss them at all, and neither do my neighbours. ;)

PSB would be better suited to the Pioneer IMHO. If possible, choose the same speaker for front and rear, you'll enjoy movies much more.

After owning a few pairs of both speakers I would go with the Paradigms. Better resale value if you decide to sell later in life for an upgrade etc. Also the Paradigms are still made in Canada where as PSB's are in China.

Prefer PSB - don't like paradigm, especially the monitor series. Something to think about: your music preference may well sound better with a bit of fat bass, not to mention some distortion. But if you're sure you want a clean sound, and regardless of your brand choice, speaker size is more important, and for your budget and space, I think smaller is better - a separate sub (decent ones are pricey) may be the ticket, along with bookshelves. Towers in this price range especially don't have the best quality bass - and the more they have, the more other parts of the spectrum seem to suffer.
Good luck.
