Hello,

Allow me to introduce, new to the vintage audio realm. Recently inherited at vintage Pioneer PL514 turntable (which has yet to arrive) and purchase the following package;

Toshiba TMC 7540 Receiver
Dual 1229 TT - appears to be working minus cartridge and needle
BSR Macdonald 610 (not working)
ADC Sound Shaper 110
Advent Baby 3 speakers

There's some variety! Looking for advice especially with respect to purchasing and setting up the Dual (I have no experience in this area) and would like to learn how to do it! I am willing to offer up the BSR Macdonald for advice, the idea being that someone who can teach could likely fix it for themselves. That and would be helping to feed a young mind. Any advice welcomed look forward to meeting and connecting with those in my community.

Logan

Welcome to CAM!
There's a wealth of knowledge here and many passionate members. Expect a lot of info WTO the Dual's set-up.
Remember that the point of this hobby - or any hobby for that matter - is to have fun.
Some members seem to have forgotten about that and take things a little too seriously.

Thanks for the welcome, I will be playing around with the table this week (it was sold to me as dead but simple had a connection unplugged on the bottom). It sounds smooth when running but needs a cartridge and needle. I will spend some time and try to figure out if I can get it to work!

So I am back for some advice.

Set up this system this morning. Toshiba into the Advents.

I have some sound! Which is a good start, but...

Quite a bit of crackling (especially with the volume knob) but a bit with the others as well.

In addition moving the volume knob causes the speakers to cut in and out (unpredictably to an extent) and random volume swells/decreases.

I know the pots likely need to be cleaned but I am wondering what might be causing the speakers to cut in and out, would a cleaning of the pots fix this as well?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A thourough cleaning of all pots, switches and connectors is the first step. DeOxIt is probably the best thing to use for this. No sense in trying to identify any other problems until that is done. While you are in there, take a good look at all the electrolytic caps (small, plastic covered aluminium cans) for any sign of leaking or bulgeing tops which will need replacing as well as for any signs of overheating or charred components.

Thanks for the help, I will be picking up some cleaner and going through it at some point this week. Hope a good cleaning is all that it needs.

Dude, blow some air in there at the same time.
Anything with a screw head on it can be twitched a little bit.
Also, if you are handy, the transistors might use a bit of heatsink compound...
But at least be sure the screw holding it down th the heat sink is tight.

Have fun!

It appears that the contact cleaner has worked, everything has cleared up with the exception of the phono input which sounds muffled (quite bass heavy) and lacking overall volume. Not much of a concern considering I am using the Aux and it sounds great.

Thanks for the advice, nice to not be reliant on the macbook speakers...

What did you plug into the phono inputs to get that sort of bass heavy sound? The ONLY thing that should be plugged into a phono input is a turntable witl a magnetic cartridge.

Well I suppose I am showing my inexperience. I have no TT or other magnetic input to plug in, I was doing so with an out from my computer. Next step is to get the a turntable that works so I can start collecting some vinyl.

Thank you for your collective help.
