To my Darling Daughter,
As you know, your dad is not the most talented man ever placed on this earth. Your dad is not the richest man as well. Your dad has many shortcomings but always struggles to do his best. The one thing I can do which does not cost any money or take much thought is to give you gifts from the heart, from me. We have very little in common but we both have the love of music. Of course, our tastes are not always the same in music but thats Ok.
A few years back I was able to give you a very special gift. Our good friend and neighbour who we loved and enjoyed for so many years passed away. We were able to acquire a nice little Marantz receiver that she and her husband owned. So many times we would visit them as you know and can remember that sweet old couple dancing together to their favourite country music artists. They were a big part of your early life and ours.
When our friend passed away, I was able to acquire that same Marantz receiver with the intent of getting it all fixed up for you. That promise I kept and packed the unit up for it's trip to Georgetown to have a total rebuild. I wanted you to have it for many years to come!
Mr. Bridge worked his magic on it and when it arrived back to us, the old 2265 was as good as new. Mr. Bridge knew how important that machine was to us and I think he put a little extra "spit-shine" on it for us. As you know, to this day that little receiver is still singing and has that real cool 70's look. I know it was a few years ago but I want you to remember that was a gift from my heart. The gift of music and a piece of Vintage audio equipment.
Your dad does not know much more about anything else.
This gift came unconditionally as I intended. I hope it is still with you long after I am gone.
The only thing I ask of you is, take care of it, think of me when you use it and please, oh please, get rid of those God Damn Cerwin Vegas!!!!!!

Love Dad

Perhaps your daughter could learn now to clean switches and pots (using Deoxit) and maybe replace fuse lamps and bulbs in order to maintain the 2265 over the years. Nice letter, not sure why you posted it for all to see but that was a nice gesture giveing her the receiver. I know know her age, but many kids today only use iPods and don't know from Stereo receivers etc.. Re: The Cerwins, could be worse, she could own Bose speakers ...ouch! If Saul Marantz were still alive he would get her to use different speakers.

Actually, I wrote this letter today just after having to Deoxit the volume control. The only job I did on this receiver was replace the fuse lights.....bugger of a job on this one. My tech installed all new indicator lights and dial pointer light. My daughter and I just cannot agree about the Cerwin Vega's.
Why I wrote this letter on a public forum......why not? It was a good story.

Nice story. I could picture myself doing the same thing. I can also picture my daughter looking at it and asking, "Where does my iPod plug in?" :D

Did you ever think that maybe your daughter is waiting for another gift from the heart, this time the part of your heart that relates to loudspeakers, to replace those Cerwin Vega"s for her? :D

My daughter has been following this post. She shed a tear when she read the first part and laughed at my final comment on the Cerwin Vegas. She asked me "what should I replace them with?". My response to her was "something musical!!"
I did have a pair of Energy Ref 22's that I was willing to give her that had two working tweeters. They did not have the size of the Vega's and did not suit her fancy. I was actually willing to save up the money to have both tweeters rebuilt prior to their demise. She does have her eyes on my main speakers in the living room. But what do I replace them with........Cerwin Vega's?

Trading your speakers for her Vegas....now THAT really would be a gift from the heart!

Yes it is a good story. perhaps your daughter could listen to other speakers at your friends homes just to educate her on the various types and quality that exist. She might have liked a pair of Camber 3i's that just sold for $100 or the many other great speaker deals that exist these days. In fact, as you know, she could get very good speakers for under $250.00 no problem and that 2265 will suffice for most models she considers. 2 way, 90db+ efficiency, quality drivers and crossover and she's all set. There are many regulars at CAM that are selling quality audio; lots seem to have good taste, which is nice. Again, notice, little Bose or Vega's listed.

I think you should get her going on vinyl as well!
Who was that cam member that cleansed his soul by shipping some American a TT after a deal gone bad?
Hell, tell a good story on a cdp deal gone bad to some buyer in Nigeria or better yet, Gatineau !
Surely someone will step up to the plate!
