Since there has been so much fuss about The Beatles as of late I thought I would see whom everyone likes better - I understand that this was a defining question in the 60's about taste, attitude and lifestyle: The Beatles being something kind of nice and the Stones being something dangerous (I have never been a big fan of The Beatles personally). Of course, the detracting thing with the Stones is that they haven't made a good record in years while The Beatles quit while they were ahead...

I spun the white Album, then Beggers banquet.

In terms of releasing albums, the Beatles quit while they were ahead. Score one for the Beatles.
The Stones released the "holy trinity" of rock and roll albums (Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers). Score one for the Stones.
The Beatles stopped touring before they made their best music. Minus one for the Beatles.
The Stones have been recognized as one of the best live performing bands for decades. Score another one for the Stones.

Ergo, it's the Stones.
Next question please. LOL.

I thought the Stones' best years were with Mick Taylor - it's been downhill ever since

Just downloaded & watched, 'Cocksucker Blues' - some amazing live stuff, seeing Stevie Wonder playing with the Stones is awesome.
From what I hear The Stones can still pull it off live ( I don't know about Jagger though) - I just wish they would do an all blues cover record and show off some of their old chops...
I don't know "Sister Midnight' versus, 'Yellow Submarine'? I can't see myself turning on the black light and hitting the bong to most of The Beatles - but that's just me

What about The Who? In many ways they were THE most influential rock band and were superb at both live performances and on record, and they never jumped the shark the way the Stones did.

As for the poll, I like early Stones and late Beatles.

Hmmm...Like 'em both...but that said,
probably play more Stones than Beatles.

BTW always figgered (at least in my mind)
the Stones 'Holy Trinity' were Exile on Main Street,
Beggars banquet and Goats head Soup..

Ever here the 7" of The Who cover 'Under my Thumb' and 'The Last Time' - totally wicked!

"The Last Time," Yes. I can't help thinking this band should have been included in the poll. And I find it hard to pick a favourite, though in so many ways The Beatles were unique, no other band sounded like them. Some bands such as "Strawberry Alarm clock" and "Sir Douglas Quintet" owe a lot to the Beatles and the Mersey sound.

Beatles did more in less time and have become cultural icons with a far bigger mass appeal across the world - the Stones have been around far longer and accomplished far less on both counts.

Preference for me also goes to the Beatles - I can play several of their songs in my head (which usually plays better than their rather atrocious recordings on all formats). Mick Jagger's mumbling through lyrics and his generally poor vocals grate on my nerves.

I like Aerosmith and AC/DC more than the Stones - Tyler has the same huge mouth got hit in the face with a shovel look. Maybe he and Jagger were separated at birth.

PS not saying the Stones are worse or the Beatles are better - music is far too much gut feeling - you like the tunes or you don't. I just happen to like more Beatles tunes - even the "pop" like early work over the Stones.

Of course this was the quintessential question of the sixties. The Beatles were for sisters and mothers, girly stuff. The Stones had attitude and rocked! The irony was that the "sweety" Beatles came from the slums of Liverpool and had survived Hamburg. They must have been tough! The Stones were actually middle class. Mick had a scholarship to the London School of Economics and Brian came from Cheltenham Spa, an upmarket suburb.

Personally, while the Beatles wrote beautiful enduring melodies, they were too cute by half. The Stones were less musically creative but captured our angst and rebellious nature which is why they remain in number one spot in my heart.

Honourable mention to: The Kinks (Ray Davies is a genius), The Who (ditto Pete Townshend), The Animals (Eric Burton may have been the best white blues belter ever), a further cast of dozens: The Hollies, The Troggs, Them, The Searchers etc.

Long live the British Invasion!
