Hi,

I'm trying to decide between an Anthem AVR (MRX series) or the separate pre/pro AVM60. To me it looks like the AVM60 is simply a MRX720/1120 without any amplification? Is the pre/pro section of the two exactly the same? Does anyone know the real difference between the two?

If that's the case I can get a much less expensive MRX720 which still has 11.2 pre-outs and use any amplifier I want. If I buy used I would be close to the same price as an AVM60 and have 'better' amplification all round.

cheers!

The units are similar. The AVM 60 does not have the amps section obviously but trades that for balanced outputs and a dedicated headphone amplifier which the receiver's don't have. It also has multi-channel analogue inputs. Depends what your requirements are. I personally went with the AVM60 because I had amps already and I do like to run balanced when possible.

But is the output from the AVM60 truly balanced or just XLR's ?. I only ask because there's a lot of reasonably expensive gear out there with XLR inputs and outputs that is not actually balanced. Brystons preamps come to mind.

Not sure but I doubt it. It would be cost prohibitive to build 11 fully differential circuits and probably not really required for this application.
