Hey,

My trusty NAD 2600 finally started to get crackly in one channel. I would repair it but I'm not sure its worthwhile putting any more money into this guy. Its duties are just my rear 5.1 channels so I'm not looking for something expensive. It would ideally be over 200w but I'm willing to go a bit lower. Whats good, what do people like? Why is it getting really hard to find used sub $500 amps?

Welcome to CAM EveDoesAudioThings!

Maybe a bit over your budget but may fit the bill:

Outlaw M200 or 2200

They're monoblocks so you'll need two. They show up on CAM once in a while.

Welcome to CAM Eve.

Using the search filters there are currently 152 amplifiers listed on CAM between the price of $100 to $500. Everything from the excellent sounding Acurus A-250 to the monstrous 1600 Watt Behringer NU6000DSP iNUKE. I’m sure you'll have no trouble finding something that will fit your needs.

None of those meet the OP's specs (i.e. +200 W).

Although good luck in finding an amp for $500 that can deliver clean 200 W.

That being said, here's a Phase Linear 400 for $500: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649369617-phase-linear-solid-state-stereo-amplifier-2x200w-good-working-condition/

Sub $500 to your specs will be an older piece most likely that may also need work. I would suggest contacting DTS Audio (Dan) and have him check out the NAD.

What kind of rear speakers are being employed that require 200 watts plus? My two front/main (full range) 3 way speakers (93db eff. 4ohm) are currently being powered by an 80w power amp that can drive them to near rock concert levels. (no sub required)
Rear speakers do almost nothing and don't even make any bass. Any amp that powers them would likely never be putting out any more than 1 or 2 watts. Although, I guess that might be the equivalent of 200 watts of Chinese built surround receiver power.

Seriously though there are plenty of nice old Nad amps that come up for sale in the 200-300 range here on Cam, just keep looking.
I would have to agree that before a new purchase you might want to get an estimate from Dan at DTS. Ive had several repairs performed there over the years. And the cost is usually in the 40-180$ range.

Dan fixed a NAD 2200 for me same problem worked great after that.

Hmmm ... I'm using Alon Model IV (87dB eff going from 8 to 3 ohms) in the front and they'll barely phart with 80 watts!!

Well Tom, you've answered yourself.
87 db verses 93...
Of course you need more power. Your speakers are inefficient.
Apples and Oranges...

To the "OP", you mentioned "put any more money into" the Nad. I am guessing this implies you've had to put money into it prior? Bit confused because you also called it "trusty"...

Personally, if its been good - and you are happy with it, perhaps a repair is in order.
If not, or you are looking at an upgrade - well, let the shopping begin.

Remember, used on CAM may also equate to issues in the short term...there is no guarantee its going to be better a week from now, month from now, etc.

Rear channel, IMO, is less crucial as its typically a "effects" channel.
Its probably more important your channels are all balanced in level more than anything...

What are you using for a processor?

Plenty of decent Haflers, Parasounds, Nads, on Canuck I guess...but, what do you gain over just servicing this amp?

Just thought I'd mention that I have a Nad 2700 that has the same specs as the op's amp and a Bryston 4Bsst2 and back to back driving the same speakers ( Bryston Middle T's ) you'd be hard pressed to tell which amp was rated higher power. Might indeed be worth fixing the Nad.

Look for a Parasound, good quality for a reasonable price... either that or pry open your wallet for a couple hundred more...
