Thats the problem. Once you get where you want, a slight improvement means changing everything to get a wee bit better or somewhat different.
Once you get where you want might take decades.

That's the right ting to do. Let the deal come to you rather than force the issue just because the sickness has taken control....

You might be able to swing to a Moon P-3 if you keep watching CAM/A-gon etc. The P-3 is a great, slightly less version of the P-5 and does have balanced outs to run into your Brystons. Just my 2 cents...

You Were Absolutely Right.

In a series of deals that happened very quickly I made enough cash to pull the trigger on a preamp.
I have truly decided and commited myself to the Canary CA 601mk ll.
I think the stars are aligned... so by the days end I will have pulled the trigger with confidence in knowing the audio bug did not bite me on this purchase but rather I planned it out and did it right.

Congrats Chip! Let us know your thoughts on how it sounds with your Bryston.

What do you want in the preamp? Minimalist with sufficient inputs? Specific feature(s)?

I have a tough time justifying anything in the signal path that adds to the recorded sound. On/off switch, source selection, diminutive size. This is where I'm at. Small, minimalist, functional. Manual, like my cars.

Agree with this entirely where audio signals pass through switches and pots , particularly in preamps
Ideally you want a light activated variable attenuator, that does not include signal earth common with
DC cathode.

Well after talking to a trusted member who pm'd me i am going to rework my parameters.
Balanced ok but not necessarily needed.
Hybrid is ok.Budget under 800$.
Am now looking at a Canary Audio ca601 mkii.
Or maybe a Sonic Frontier sfl-1

Canary makes some nice stuff, I cant speak about the pre but I ran one of their amps for years until a buddy convinced me to sell it to him.

Hey all..
The Canary preamp arrived today and as promised I'm reporting back.
It is about 19 pounds and has a torroidal transformer.
It uses 2 6922 and 1 6sn7 tubes.
Upon hooking it up i let it power up for a good 5 minutes so as to make sure all was good with the electrical.

Well the moment of truth was well worth the wait.
It filled my room with the sweetest of sound.
The bass is deep and controlled. The mids are warm and full and the high frequencies sparkle.
The soundstage is big but not bloated at all.
Very realistic in its presentation of all my sources.
I really think its a keeper along with my Bryston amp.
Im a very happy camper with this preamp.
Cheers

Hey, hey, glad it worked out Chip. Canary makes really nice sounding stuff -- I've owned some of it in the past. Hey, am I allowed to say I told you so?

Tell me Chip, what speakers have you got?

Well after much consideration my Bryston 12b w/phono has to be stepped up from but where to go?
I want to keep it SS but i wouldn't mind a line stage and worry about phono later.
Also i would really like to have balanced outputs with at least one balanced input.
This may seem like a tall order but thats what im after.
Open to suggestions and haven't thought about budget but would like to keep it under 1K $.
As always thanks.
Just bought a Bryston 3B ST.

Cambridge Audio 840-E: It's simply excellent. The most underrated preamplfier if there ever was one.

Consider the SST series -much, much better than the ST series. It's worth whatever extra cost is required for the SST. In fact, the 3B-SST has the perceived power (with superior bass power, control, extension l & finesse) than the 4B ST -by a large margin.

Sure, the SST series might be better than the ST series, but now that Chip has had a taste of what tubes can do, seems to me the next step might be a matching power amp. :P

Well, moving in that direction (what tubes can do) consider the sensational Classe CA-2100 (circa 2004-2010) if you want to hear the best of tubes & SS -these amps are simply superb.
