Well after much consideration my Bryston 12b w/phono has to be stepped up from but where to go?
I want to keep it SS but i wouldn't mind a line stage and worry about phono later.
Also i would really like to have balanced outputs with at least one balanced input.
This may seem like a tall order but thats what im after.
Open to suggestions and haven't thought about budget but would like to keep it under 1K $.
As always thanks.
Just bought a Bryston 3B ST.

What do you want in the preamp? Minimalist with sufficient inputs? Specific feature(s)?

I have a tough time justifying anything in the signal path that adds to the recorded sound. On/off switch, source selection, diminutive size. This is where I'm at. Small, minimalist, functional. Manual, like my cars.

Well considering i ran 2 -2b lp"s with a passive pre before i am very much minimalist approach in the signal path.
No tone controls although balance control can be useful.
I only run external dac/ tuner and table.
Thats it. But i would really like balanced out and in.

Balanced inputs is like a microphone preamp or PA system I think. That adds circuitry, so that narrows it to boutique stuff probably.
Scan here there and everywhere for sale ads. It would help if you have specific items to go search but stuff with balanced XLR makes me think Krell, Rowland and Levinson. Problem is that "law firm" will be out of budget.
Better call Saul... Musical Fidelity.
Search f/s up to $1200 and roll the dice.

Well after talking to a trusted member who pm'd me i am going to rework my parameters.
Balanced ok but not necessarily needed.
Hybrid is ok.Budget under 800$.
Am now looking at a Canary Audio ca601 mkii.
Or maybe a Sonic Frontier sfl-1

For that price I'd grab it. You can always resell if it doesn't work out. Should easily get your money back. But I'd be surprised if it didn't work out. I've owned Canary stuff, although not that particular preamp. It's always very nice; smooth, tonally accurate, controlled, harmonically rich and they throw huge stages. Nice stuff.

EL34... do you think it would pair well with the Bryston amp?... and do you think it would be a step up from my 12b pre?

To be honest I'm not entirely sure because I've never heard it with a Bryston amp. You've got a trusted friend recommending it though; has s/he heard the combo? I used to own CA 160 mono blocks and really liked them. I only sold them because I wanted to move from PP to SET amps. Otherwise they were really nice sounding amps. Canary has a reputation for producing smooth, tonally rich music with very dimensional sound stages. Bass is good if not the very best. Not sure why it wouldn't work with the Bryston, unless there was some sort of impedance mis-match.

The Canary piece does look tempting and is within budget.
For an alternate take, a Schiit Freya is around your budget and can be used in various modes, with or without tubes in the signal path.
The fellow I bought my Saga from went to the Freya and is pairing it with Bryson amplification with good results.

I know, I know, out of budget. But so nice...http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/ ... f2-preamp/
Perhaps a reasonable offer to the seller might negotiate you a deal closer to your range.

To my ears the pre has always been the most important link in the chain. Perhaps worth waiting a bit to save up and do a more significant upgrade in that area.

Bryston BP25 might be a stretch, but an obvious choice I'm sure you've thought of. BP20's go for $800 if you don't need a remote.

When I purchased my BP25 one of the balanced outputs was a little corroded. Bryston replaced all 4 balanced inputs/outputs, and all the toggle switches free of charge. Hard to beat that.

If you like transparency in your preamp I'd stay with Bryston.

This might be a little over your budget but worth considering.

Adcom GFP-750 in perfect condition at $1199 USD.

Given your criteria I don't think there is anything within your budget that is worth looking at...my suggestion is, rather than make all these at best, sideway moves, is to save up and get something superlative that will give you years of excellent performance. 8)
