'Bernard' says: >>The best preamp that I have ever heard in my system was the Audio Research Ls5 MkII. It was the most dynamic, involving and smooth sounding piece of hardware.... It mated with my SS amps in a way that's hard to describe. Try one of the newer YBA integrated such as the Passion 350 (or take a look at the current YBA power and preamp listing on this site). 8)

I went through a lot of preamps until I pulled the trigger on a C2500 and mated with SS amps.

The cost of entry is ridiculous, but so is this hobby

It's like riding a motorcycle, no one bike does it all...really depends on the recording.

Thank you all for sharing your ideas.

Now I need to decide where to start my upgrade journey from:

1. Keep my Bel Canto Pre3 and upgrade the power amp to a solid state class A, something like Pass Labs, First Watt etc.

2. Keep my Bel Canto Pre3 and upgrade the power amp to a tube amp, something like Primaluna, Rogue Audio etc.

3. Keep my Bel Canto monoblocks and upgrade the preamp to a tube preamp, something like Rogue Audio, Primaluna, MA2300 or even MA2500

If you are keeping the Focal speakers drop the Bel Canto amps. The preamp should be fine.

I sell Focal. If you came into my store looking for warmth and weight you would not be leaving with 1028be's! Precise and accurate yes, romantic and soulful, not so much! And short of spending a lot of money on some very dark sounding valve gear this is the Electra all business. One comment caught my attention "an acquired taste much like panels or B&W's" true very true.

What I love about the 1038s is their ability to change their sonic character with even the slightest system change. This opens so many possibilities for tweaking and upgrades   And in the end this is what this hobby is about
