Glad to hear your dad's alive! :-) If you liked the sound of your dad's system, why not ask him what amp he used to drive the Forests? Also, if he's in search of a particular tube or set of tubes, you should let him know we're here. Lot's of guys on this site sell tubes. He just might find what he's after.

'PROG U.K.' replaced his NAD M3 with Anthem 225, as he find the Anthem 225 a better amp than NAD M3 http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/integrated-advice.314053/

I once owned the HK 3470 two channel receiver, sounded nice with lots of powerful bass oomph.

There is a HK 3770 for sale at CAD $340 on http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harman-Kardon-HK-3700-2-Channel-USB-Stereo-Receiver-Black-/252416446181?hash=item3ac5314ee5:g:f2QAAOSwtUtXA1p2 (Item location: Richmond, BC, Canada).

The modification cost of HK 990 is $450 at Stereo Daves, and I think the modification cost of the HK 3770 two channel receiver is less than the modification cost of HK 990.

If you get that HK 3770, you'll have the opportunity to send the HK 3770 to Stereo Daves to let them modify it, and you will get a modified HK 3770 two channel receiver that compete with and beat two channel integrated amps that cost at least 10 times the price of the HK 3770 ---> http://www.stereodaves.com/hk3490.php

I'm not sure if it's possible to buy a modified HK 990 at Stereo Daves. May be worth to check it out at http://www.stereodaves.com/hk990.php

An NAD M3 puts out 180 W (Class A) in a dual mono design, which is more than enough "Oomph" to make your speakers really sing.

Around the $1,800 mark: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649311201-nad-masters-series-m3-dual-mono-integrated-amplifier/

Just an update - I decided before I go any further to try hooking these up to my Nad L53 which drives a pair of bookshelf Dana Audio in my bedroom. The NAD is rated at 50w per - on the low end but I emailed Totem to see if it was safe to try it and they said yes.

So, I've been listening to them on that and it's nice - better than anything else I have here but it's just not there. I went to the Sound Room and listened to a pair of Totem Sttafs and oh man, they had that paired with an Arcam A39 (I think) and that sounded beautiful. I still haven't decided on what to do. I think the reality of my listening which is 100% digital/streamed to try to go into Vinyl will significantly change my listening habits. I think perhaps now I might look at a DAC that accepts a streamed source (Mass Fidelity Relay) and move into a better paired integrated. And then, one day, foray into vinyl.

Anyway, as I type this, I've got my Forrest singing to me and am happy. :D

'Yannis' says: >>The speakers were again the Monitor Audio RX1s. Surprisingly, both Arcam A39 and Naim Nait XS2 sounded fine with regards to the bass. If anything, the A39 had a more pronounced and distinct bass. The Naim XS-2 presented vocals in a more intense fashion (stronger vocals as if the singer is closer) as compared to the Rega Elicit-R. I have heard people commenting that the Rega is bright (even the WhatHiFi review points to that) and I was expecting it to sound terrible through the Monitor Audios. To my surprise it sounded fine. Definitely better than the Arcam A39 and most importantly the bass was not standing out in a bad way. Music blended just fine. The Naim had a slightly (very subtle difference) more clear bass but this was not always a good thing for my ears. The Vocals sounded stronger through the Naim as compared to the Rega. In addition, the Rega gave me the impression of being enveloped / surrounded by the music. The Naim XS 2 gave me the feeing that the music was in front of me. I will say this again, I am very surprised with Arcam. Based on my experience with the A19 I felt absolutely certain that I love the Arcam house sound. The A39 feels very very different. I ended up ordering the Rega.<< http://hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/99384-arcam-a39-impressions/

Suffice it to say I have now left Naim amps behind me and the never ending upgrade philosophy which frankly was beginning to p*** me right off!<< http://hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/57830-naim-naitxs-versus-primare-pre-power-combo/

'audioaffiar' says: >>The new Primare I32 is within budget and offers a wide range of abilities. The Primare I30 it replaces was in production for several years and one of our favourite amps - very smooth (and almost valve like) but with the transient attack of solid state. The I32 by comparison sounds even better to my ears and offers a very open sound that should match with your current set-up. If you hadn't mentioned valve, I would have recommended the Musical Fidelity M6i which is also quite stunning but errs on the brighter side compared to the warmer sound of the Primare I32.<< http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/integrated-amp

'G-man' says: >>I like the Musical Fidelity A-5 but it is a little sterile sounding to me. It's clean, detailed and powerfull but the Musical Fidelity A300 is more magical and tube sounding like. Also the 300 has great imaging and separation due to it's dual mono design. http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26133

'nedrudrelyt' says: >>Go with the Musical Fidelity A308 integrated or better yet find a Nu Vista used or even a Tri Vista used. The A5 will be a slight step down from the A308 IMO. Build quality is much better in the A308 series than the A300, A5 and even the KW series.<< http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26133

'rar1' says: >>I prefer the Musical Fidelity A308 line to the new A5 line. 'kdbg' says: >>Two months ago I had a chance to compare Musical Fidelity A308 to A5 side by side in the same system. Speakers were Dynaudio 1.8Mk2. IMO A308 is way better than A5. Simply no contest.<< https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/musical-fidelity-a5-or-a308-integrated

'fastmike85c5' says: >>Well, I have a Musical Fidelity A308 for 3 years whith Sonus Faber Grand Piano, and a Denon 3910 DVD. The bass is thin, the system is too bright. I don´t like my sound. Even whit my Rel Strata III, I don´t like the sound. I have a Michell Turntable Gyrodec SE, and the bass is better, but the sound still analic. Now I have my oldest NAD 317 replacing the most expensive Musical Fidelity and the Nad have a better sound. Why? I don´t Know. Synergy? Probably. But I suspect Musical Fidelity isn´t that good they claim to be. Like my english!! My advice is to go to something else.<< https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/mf-a300-to-a308-notable-improvement

Quick update.

Pulled the trigger on a 2006 Musical Fidelity A3.5 integrated. Ships tomorrow...and I can't wait.

Of course now, I'm researching turntables. Time to move into that sub-forum. Wish me luck! And thanks for all the help here...I'm sure i'll be back.

Congrats on the MF! I'm sure you'll be happy with the results.

Good luck on the search for an analog rig!
