I'd say Bose, Infinity, Klipsch, Polk, and JBL are the best.

Not who I would mention. Maybe JBL in the 1970's .Today? Magnepan and Wilson Audio would be at or near the top. There are many that would be considered over Bose and the others.

Strange topic; How about starting with some of the countries that make great speakers? Greatest American speakers, kind of like asking about the best thing on the menu at McDonalds.

What do we mean by American? American company? assembled in America? designed in America? American made components? Just wondering; I have speakers from a Canadian company but I don't consider them to be Canadian speakers because the drivers and crossovers are not Canadian.

A buddy of mine has had Von Scheikert speakers in his system for quite some time. He has had two different pairs and anytime I have heard them they sound great. They are made in the USA.

I agree with the vintage JBL stuff from the 70s and would add Klipsch from the Heritage days too, Polk and Infinity back in the 70s as well. But none of those companies are still making world class speaker these days. Most of the classic great US speaker manufacturers are long defunct or just resurrected brand names for cheap offshore made speakers.

Magnepan and Martin Logan are great speakers, but an acquired taste for many. I'm not a huge fan of the Wilsons, though I will not dispute their hugely loyal following. Others? NHT, Meyer Sound, Snell, Freid, Zu Audio ... your are likely to get as many different answers as there are people with different tastes in terms of sound.
