I find that Magnepan MMG's are really tough to beat and they can be had for about $500

Proac Response Two S are hard to beat for the price (used), IMHO.

I am currently using Altec Lansing Model 19.
I paid less than $2000 for the pair.

For considerably less than $2000 you could get a pair of quad esl63s. There have been a few for sale recently. Just be sure to do your checks to make sure they're in good condition. You may even get a pair of esl57s in good condition. Either one is in the running IMO to be the best speaker ever made.

The 2's and 2S are worthy contenders. The Quads can be fragile and expensive to fix. (panels are currently worth about $400 apiece and you need four for a 63)

I bought my quads for $1300 from someone who claimed he listened once a month in a humidity controlled room. Similar to the old "I used it to drive to church and back on the highway" line when buying a car. However I've had them three years of absolutely problem free listening, and I don't baby them. My point is, you can get a pair in good condition. For $2000 you might get a pair that has been rebuilt.

Gallo Reference 3.1

+1 on the Gallos.

You might also find a pair of Stradas with the matching 3D sub for under $2000 if you are patient and shop carefully.
I run my Stradas with a 15W SET tube amp in the winter and a 70W ss amp in the summer. Since the sub does the heavy lifting, a 15W tube amp is plenty of power.

Finally: I think used Theils are great value. The fine woodwork gets dinged up over time, reducing the value, so you can get excellent sound for very little money... again with the caveat that you wait for the right deal, and can forgive a missing flake of veneer that's almost too small to see. If Thiels appeal to you, I'd suggest spending a few months reading ads to acquaint yourself with the various models. They have numbers, and it's hard to tell from the number what's "in them". And there are some real deals if you are patient.

Free is my favorite price.

At my desk right now: Kavent CD-731, Gallo Stradas, Gallo TR3D Sub, Raysonic SE-30A mk II (winter amp), ShengYa AS90 (summer amp), Dragonfly DAC2
