Unequivocally yes, the Debut series are the best budget speakers going today....B5 are the best value of the bunch though!

Anyone that disagrees just hasn't heard them. It's not so much what they do, it's that they don't do anything wrong. That's all you can ask of a speaker in this price range.

Good enough for Michael....and many other discerning audiophiles!

$420 for B6, $370 B5....but I know a place you can get a great deal on them!

Atlas Video in Victoria has a pair of PSB Alpha bookshelf speakers being sold under their Clearance section; $199.
There you go, cheers Simon :)

No offense, but everyone seems to be forgetting the "modestly flat" request. A pair of reasonably priced monitors still seem the most reasonable option.

These are also very nice speakers for the money but the cosmetics aren't perfect.

No affiliation.

Elac B5 would probably be at the top of my list. The Wharfedale Diamond series are also great speakers for their $.

Nice set of Usher S520's in the classifieds now. Could be worth considering.

I had a set of Pioneer SBPS22SLRs while my Maggies were out for repair. These offer a lot of quality for $ and will leave a bit of coin to put towards a pair of stands if needed: http://www.visions.ca/Catalogue/Categor ... brandId=63.

I would have purchased the speakers first and then look for an amp to drive them based on what the speakers need, not the other way around. A vintage amp rated in real watts under a specified frequency range with low distortion might be preferable to some T-amps which may put out their rated wattage only at 10% distortion into 4-ohm loads and once you adjust for reasonable distortion levels may be putting out single-digit watts into 8-ohm loads.

Sounds like a good plan: TANNOYS are a quantum leap better speaker, but they are priced accordingly in a different strata; and you won't get them for $200

You never know though. Years ago I sold a pair of 1-year old passive Tannoy Reveals in mint condition including a pair of Target 1-pillar steel stands for $180. Long and McQuade London has a used pair right now for $179.

As many have recommended, Wharfedale is a good buy. If you are in the used market the Mission 770 and 700 were also great values. Actually I think the 770's deserve to be placed among other classic speakers like the Spendor BC1, Quad ESL 57 etc. The 770's are also dirt cheap compared to Spendors. You shoul be able to find a pair between $150 - $400. I'd look for a series 1 or 2 as they seem to be favoured for sounding the best out of the five series produced.
