Totem truly knows what they're doing. If they can do this good at the Rainmaker price point, I'm really curious about the Hawks or Forests.

I preferred the Rainmaker to the Forest, having owned them both at the same time ... I'm not saying they are a better speaker, but in my experience the Rainmaker is faster, more articulate, has greater transparency, and are better at communicating the emotion of the music. I ran them with an 8" Mirage sub.

It goes without saying that the Forest have a bigger, fuller, more robust sound ... but I have fond memories of the Rainmaker.

I have to agree. While Totem does have a bit of a house sound, I wouldn't really say many of their speakers sound overly similar. The closest would be an Arro to Hawk maybe. The thing I've found with Totem is that despite going up the line, you end up giving up something.

My desire with the Rainmakers is to cross them over and have a sub take the lower frequencies exclusively. To this end I’m getting a preamp that can do this(Halo P5) in a couple of days. I’ve noticed that the Rainmaker woofer really moving a lot with some material at higher volumes, and although I stay away from distortion, I’d like to hear what they can do with such a set up.

I have been running them with 200 watts at their 4 ohm rating, but I stay below 85-89 decibels at my seating distance.

That's a great idea. I've heard a pair of Arros with the Storm subwoofer and it was pretty incredible!

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way then. Instead of considering the Hawks, maybe I should think about the Model One or the Sky standmounts.

I think you really need to go for a listen. I personally didn't think going from the Arro to the Sky tower was a worthwhile upgrade. Better? Yeah a bit but not at that price they were asking.

But I have heard the Rainmaker with a Sim i5 and I think the new tweeter on the Sky would be an upgrade there. Not a huge upgrade but I think you need to listen since you're more intimate with the Rainmaker in your system :)

For me to upgrade and feel it's worthwhile, the delta needs to be fairly big which is why I went from the Arro to a fairly big floorstander.

Yeah, I need to do some listening, just trying to narrow down a short list. I know I'm impressed with Totem's approach with the Rainmaker. I keep reading that their classic towers can have various shortcomings and I don't want to pony up for the Fire element line. The one con I've had with the Rainmakers is their power handling limits.

The preamp came in and I've installed it, crossing over the Totems at 80 Hz. It's a sizeable improvement for sure. Plus the pre is superior to the one in the Nad as well. I don't feel like I have a pressing need for an upgrade in the speaker department at this point. I've still got to break in the other speakers I mentioned earlier, to be fair to them, but so far, the Rainmakers just sound better. With that little peerless woofer and all!
