My sister lives in Newfoundland. She dropped me a note telling me her good ole reliable kitchen radio finally died.

She doesn't want anything fancy - read no cd, bluetooth, etc

Just a good quality AM/FM radio. And not too bulky in size.
It will be sitting on a kitchen counter.

I know little about this area.

I have read about these two radios getting some respect though -

1) Tivoli Audio® Model One® AM/FM

and

2) Sangean WR-11 Table Top Radio

They are slightly different price points but for arguments sake lets say that does not matter in this case.

Can you advise me a little on this choice?

....and is there anything else that she should consider?

Thanks for helping me (her) out with this.

I own the Tivoli model one BT (for Bluetooth), but the non-BT is still available. I went through the shopping round 3 years ago and the Tivoli is our kitchen partner every morning. You cannot do much simpler, better-sounding (due to it's box made of wood and quality speaker) and nice tuner circuit inside. A no-brainer in my book...

Here you go...get her something cool. I have no affiliation of course...and being that you're in Winnipeg your choices may be more limited (I'd prefer a nice bakelite radio from the 40's, but hey)

It's already lasted > 50 years, so it's probably reliable ;)

I gave my GF a Tivoli Model One several years ago. She loves it. She hates fussing and does not want instruction. It's perfect for her.

Another vote for Tivoli. It's not the cheapest option, but is simple to use, well made, stylish, and functional.

On the subject of radios, this is one area where I could see myself picking up a retro item. I really like the style and quality of vintage Grundig:

We've got a Tivoli Model 10 in our bedroom...sounds amazing and pulls in more stations than the little sucker has a right to! :D

Thanks for all the input folks.

I think partially on budget she decided to order the Sangean WR-11.
$70 less on the product itself vs the Tivoli.

I am hopeful she will like it and it will serve her well for her particular needs in this space.

Well my sister took delivery of her Sangean......and she really loves it!
The look, the sound....here is what she said. Remember she's not into audio in any way so don't judge her choice of language :D .....just kidding!

Quote:
"It's a very rich sound...lots of mellow bass and absolutely clear. Even tho it is tucked in under the cabinets and close to the stove it has an incredibly clear sound. Not a hint of static....which is what the old one had. My old radio was 30 years old as well.......
I haven't tried to pull in much other than CBC....not much else out here...."

She says thanks to all my audio Forum mates who offered their counsel!! :)

So, now you need to get her a great antenna, so she can pull in CITI-FM :)
