Not surprising. I remember comparing Stax electrostatic headphones to the newly introduced Stax electret 'phones, circa 1980. The Electrets didn't give up anything, and cost was way less

Electrets being a sub-category of electrostatics with 98% of the true electrostatic sound, I am not at all surprised that they still sound good some 40 years later. After all, this is the sound that all of these newfangled high end companies have been trying (but apparently not succeeding) to duplicate. When originally trying to upgrade me same vintage Stax SR-84 electrets, I finally had to accept that the only way to improve on their sound was to higher up the Stax hierarchy, first with Stax amps and then with better headsets.

Electrets were more common in the day than people realize; what eventually killed off the breed was the use of a separate energizer box/dedicated amp and the small price difference with true electrostatics. Enjoy!

I bought a pair of AKG 340's a while back and being that they are 600 0hms i had to buy a Schiit Magni headphone amp.
They are as close to electostatics that I've gotten but between the HP amp and the headphones themselves it makes for great listening.
I find the electrostats far less fatiguing than standard phones.
