Garth Hudson of The Band and his wife Sister Maud Hudson will be performing at this year's Canterbury Folk Festival at the Yvonne Homes Mott Memorial Park in Ingersoll from July 10 to 12.

Five upright pianos will be on stage when a musical legend takes the late-night stage at Ingersoll's Canterbury Folk Festival.

Garth Hudson of The Band will be appearing with his wife Sister Maud Hudson at the three-day festival at 10 p.m. on Saturday July 11.

“He’s an icon,” said Brenda Boswell, director of promotion and marketing for the Canterbury Folk Festival. “Garth Hudson is such a piece of our history. To have an opportunity to see Garth play live is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans of his era.”

“He is incredibly, incredibly talented on the keyboards.”

Born in Ontario, Hudson, who has been inducted into both The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Juno Hall of Fame, is expected to play several of The Band songs, including tributes to bandmates who have passed away.

Hudson also performed at Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in 1969 and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show

His classic tracks The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek and I Shall be Released.

His wife, Sister Maud Hudson, who will join her spouse on stage, has recorded with The Band, Ronnie Hawkins, Cyndi Lauper and The Sadies.

“She is extremely talented,” Boswell said.

This year’s Canterbury Folk Festival will feature 30 individual performers, including a mix of local and international musicians.

“A number do live in Ingersoll or are coming back,” Boswell said.

Other notable performers, both new and returning, such as The Mudmen, The Good Lovelies, Red Moon Road, Magna Carta and Tia McGraff.

Boswell said the three-day festival acts as “very much like a homecoming” for many former residents.

“Some base their family reunions around the festival,” she said. “Some people have come every year since the beginning. It’s the highlight of the summer for some people.”

The festival is completely free and open to everyone.

“It’s a fun place to be,” Boswell said. “It’s about people coming together. It’s good old-fashioned fun.”

The family-friendly festival starts out on the Friday night with a pig roast ‘swine and dine.’ Tickets are $12 and are available on site at Yvonne Mott Memorial Park.
