For me the top act I saw at a small venue was Jeff Healey at the Odeon in Saskatoon a year or two after it opened. The guy was amazing, jumping around on stage playing great blues music with all the theatrics of Jimi Hendrix. Great show. I am glad I got to see him before he passed.

2. Peter Frampton - Bessborough Gardens , Saskatoon
3. April Wine - Prince Albert
4. Nazareth - Reds in Edmonton
5. Colin James - Exhibition Grandstand, Saskatoon

I have to add at 5th place tie was Elliott Brood at a old small bar in downtown Edmonton which I can't remember, but they played with the Sunparlor Players. One of my first dates with my future wife that I'll remember forever.

Big Sugar with The New (Blue) Meanies opening--at the Queen's in Nanaimo. Hands down. I've seen a number of other small venue shows but the only other one that stands out was Jeff Healey at a New Year's concert in Vancouver. Can't remember the name of the venue, but it's the one in that plaza that i believe was built as part of Expo 86.

The next day I was getting my hair cut...the girl cutting my hair asked me if I had done anything special for new year's and I told her I had seen Jeff Healey. Her reply: "Oh, he's pretty good for a blind guy!"

The Animals 1983 near Berri bus station can't remember the name of the venue. Steppenwolf at the Spectrom (1980?). Eric Burdon & The Bryan Auger Band at the Pioneer Club in Pointe Claire, Quebec (1992?), then at The Old Beer Garden (can't remember the new name, or time somewhere around 2008, and finally at The Montreal Jazz Fest two years ago. All the shows were awesome. I think he gets better with age.

Can't really think of 5 but two that stand out in memory were Junior Wells' last complete live performance before passing away-it was in late August/97 at the Lafayette Tap Room in Buffalo. Two weeks later he was in a coma that he never came out of.

Chick Corea and Gary Burton at the Aeolian Hall (what a great, very small, live venue for music!) here in London last fall was very cool as well. Being 20 feet away from a grand piano and vibraphone being played by two guys like that is an experience that can't be reproduced by an audio system.
