A hot sweaty night , I think it was Blue Rodeos first show off the Queen St club scene.

........had forgotten about the early Rivoli days of Blue Rodeo and that obscure UK soul singer Adele...the Rivoli has showcased a lot of great Canadian talent over the years.

David Bowie mid 90s at RPM in Toronto. After years of seeing him in big stadium tours it was very cool to be able to walk up to the stage and see him perform up close in a very intimate setting.

The Psychedelic Furs 1981 at the Masonic Temple in Toronto.

The Rot Hot Chili Peppers in a small club in Rochester NY 1987

Bauhaus at Larry's Hideaway 1982

Pat Metheny at the original Ontario Place forum rotating stage 1985 - what a brilliant venue!

Steve Earle at Fort York (!) and theatre converted to a club in Guelph (can't remember the name)
Kim Richey at the Horseshoe

also saw Little Feat at the New Century Theatre in Buffalo, not long before Lowell George died.

My top 5 small venue shows:
• Cowboy Junkies at the Grape Vine Room - little room that was part of the Phoenix. Couldn't have been more than 80 people there. They were playing from their "Whites Off Earth Now!" album. The perfect music for a small venue.
• Bare Naked Ladies - at some small bar in Ottawa's Market, c. 1991. No one knew who they were at the time, they were opening for the Rheostatics. They stole the show with their energy.
• 13 Engines - at some small basement club in Toronto's Kensington Market. They did a cover of the Buzzcock's "Why Can't I Touch It" that I still remember today.
• The Pogues at the Masonic Temple, twice, c. 1990 - say no more.
• Iggy Pop at Carleton U's Porter Hall - 1988. Could also add Billy Bragg in there.
• No Means No - The Rivoli, late 80's. Even Bruce Cochburn was there that night.
• The Sugarcubes - again, some small club in Kensington Market, before Bjork went out on her own

Great Big Sea (Bridget's Pub, St. John's--too many times to count).

Ron Hynes (The Ship Inn, St. John's--couldn't count those either).

Various Chamber Music Groups at an International Mozart Competition (The Little Theater, Memorial University, 1991--very enjoyable).

Various Artists, e.g. Figgy Duff, Rufus Guinchard, Emile Benoit, Ron Hynes, and others (St. John's Folk Festival--small crowd in the first few years and always enjoyed that).

Jeff Johnson Trio (The Duke of Duckworth Pub, St. John's--that was a good one)

I forgot to add, Eberhard weber's colours group at the phoenix. I seem to recall the opening act was Egberto Gismonti -- although I may be mistaken.

Wow, this bring back some memories,
I was at the Cowboy Junkies at the Grapevine and XTC at the Masonic Temple
I saw Robyn Hitchcock at a very small club in Hoboken New Jersey, can't remember the name.
The Gun Club at Larry's Hideaway.
the English Beat, Waterboys, Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode at Masonic Temple (not the same night)
KMFDM at the El Mocambo
But the best was O.M.D. at some place in Waterloo, I recall a very small crowd (less than 50), might have been a weeknight. Some bands would have phoned it in,
but they played liked it was a full house.

Lennon's first skiffle group playing on a street corner in Liverpool. Elvis singing Christmas carols as a kid in church.
