If you already own the equipment and you don't need the cash, why not just enjoy what it can give you.
My experience has been that the moment you get rid of the great piece, is the moment you start feeling the regret.

Your problems are common mistakes made by not understanding room acoustic problems, don't fret, there are ways to release your frustrations and stop your future heart attack.First remove floor standing Hawks and go with mites on quality stands,or some other smaller speaker.Move speakers away from rack in middle of speakers, listen in the near field, add first reflection absorbers to walls, bass trap corners behind speakers, add diffusion in middle behind speakers, experiment with chair location till sweat spot is found,if wife agrees add ceiling cloud at first reflection this will give most improvement. Now you have taken the room away, and you can start to have great fun tweaking in all different ways, there is only one sweat spot with 2ch.so you will have to sit else ware so wife can enjoy new system, you can use Sony Walkman. Most important!,vinyl only! Or what's the point of it all if you don't let the magic come through.

Heres one other thought -- if you can't change the room, change the dimensions. My floor-standing speakers sound like crap when level ... But with a slight tilt (using some felt pads under the front feet), the sound changes dramatically.

That inch of front end lift changes the distance the sound travels and what surfaces it reflects off.

It might not work with the Totems, but it works well with my Quads.

If you want to make your wife happy, sell off the system and get a, dear I say it, Bose system. It's pretty, simple, relatively inexpensive, and it doesn't sound half bad.

He doesn't have to go for a BOSE  If he did sell off everything he can afford a NAIM MU-SO or one of the Devialet Phantoms, etc. These are made for condo/apartment living crowd.

Or get a pair of STAX.
