I was going to buy another setup for my brewery anyways, so will order the Boss Dac and do a shootout at home with my already existing hifiberry Dac+. Will report back.

On the buyapi.ca site they have the Boss DAC and the Hifiberry DAC+ Pro. Any recommendations on which would be better?

Reviews (https://community.roonlabs.com/t/allo-boss-dac-review/20575) of the Boss DAC manufactured by Allo rate the DAC quite highly, the significant aspects being how it's powered and that it has two clocks on it, so it is not relying on the timing of the RPi3. There are many favourable reviews of this DAC and the company representatives are quite active on various forums and very responsive to the client base.

I've ordered one from buyapi.ca.
thanks,
Rick

I purchased the BOSS DAC, and it works well with a Pi3. I think it sounds OK, but I wouldn't expect to replace your NUC with JRiver setup.

It's a good sound for $200 CAD.

What surprised me is how quick the interface is over Wi-Fi.

It looks like a HifiBerry compatible DAC, like the one I originally picked up for my Pi a while back, http://www.robotshop.com/en/hifi-dac-pi ... b-hat.html

"The VISHAY resister, ELNA RBP2 capacitor, ERO KP1830 capacitor, WIMA MKS2 capacitor and nichicon FG series capacitor are some of the high-end resistors and capacitors that has been used to develop the HiFi DAC PiCobber raspberry Pi 2/B+ HAT."

It should work with Volumio/Runaudio when selecting the Hifiberry dac in the setup.

Does anyone know if the HDMI port is actually being used as an IS2 port and if so is it IN or is it OUT?
If so does it follow PS Audio pin connections re-IS2 over HDMI?

I'm pretty sure not. The Pi can't output I2S over HDMI, only through it's GPIO pins.

http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/diy/I2Skits/I2SEN.htm
This add-on board might work though, using the RPI GPIO header I2S pins.Maybe. It's cheap, so might be worth a shot to find out.
It's 3.3V though so you'll need to step down from the 5v USB power that the Pi uses, or use the RPI 3.3V GPIO power pin maybe.

Ok. I had OSMC running on my RP connected to a media server. Plugged in the Boss DAC and powered it back up. Now no OSMC. it appears the sound card and OSMC don't play well together.

Ok, just got the new Allo Boss DAC setup on a 2nd Raspberry Pi and began a quick shootout with the HiFiBerry+ DAC.

It isn't even close! The Boss DAC throws out WAY better bass, warmth, realism, soundstage and separation. Rich, bright, fluid, natural. Keep in mind that Allo recommends a 50 hour burn in, and I am only at about 30 minutes. The HiFiBerry+ sounds brittle and less refined in comparison.

The HiFiBerry+ isn't junk, but wow, for a measily $10 more, the Boss DAC is a definite improvement right out of the box. Total cost was $174 delivered to my door for the Allo Boss DAC and RPi 3 starter kit.

The HiFiBerry+ is definitely going to the brewery, and the Boss is staying right in my listening room!

Here's my latest update,... the IQaudio Pi-Dac +, which I purchased from a CAM member, sounds much better than the HiFiberry Dac Digi +.

I am using Volumio for the IQaudio.

I have also been using Mood Audio (paid version) with IFI Dac Nano-IDSD, and it also sounds fantastic.
I have 2 PI 3's setup for above.

Sound wise I do prefer both of these setup over the JRiver with windows 10.

Anyways that's just my opinion, others may prefer JRiver setup. :)

Running a Pi3B with an Audioquest Dragonfly red sticking out the back. Also powering the setup with a rechargeable battery. Player is Volumio streaming my own 16/44 WAV files. I have so much new stuff going on, NOS pre-amp tube, new caps still burning in. But I have to say as a source the Pi/Dragonfly combination is quite hypnotic. Huge soundstage, delicate and detailed, deep textured bass. Whole setup under $400. Nice thing too, is with the Dragonfly Red Volumio volume control is bit perfect.

I really like the ES9018 DAC so Ordered this to give the IS2 option a try. Just have to figure out the connections.
