I have a belt-drive tt with separate motor. Instead of using a rubber belt, is that a better alternative ?

I would say it depends on the shape of the pully. If it is intended for a round belt, you might be able to sub in some fishing line.

I've heard of magnetic tape being used to sub for a flat belt.
