Anybody ever heard of this before or is this a bunch of bunk?
I have a good size salt lamp I’m going to set up in my music room once I get my new system stand completed.
For now I’m just curious.

alexander_x,

I can't say with any great certainty that the lamp will help with static but it doesn't do anything for dust control. I've had one in my listening room for quite some time because my wife is insistent on having salt lamps in every room of the house. I do enjoy the ambience it provides though.

I like to spray some homeopathic product in the room. I use to use some level 2 Reikie, but it seemed seemed like to much work. :)

My wife sells them so I have two in the main listening room. They're there because I like the soft glow when I'm laid back listening to tunes. Can't say as there are any other benefits other than as mood lights.

I have an air filter/ionizer in my music room. Also in the darkroom.

Cheers,
Alec

According to this, we should all have them.

Actually thats some interesting reasons to have one....I've been looking for creative lighting for my room as I like a low light atmosphere...

I've been listening to my stereo on a bed of Schumann Resonators. But perhaps a pile of Himalayan Salt lamps is more calming!

I was wondering about salt lamps after someone in the family got one for Christmas. Someone said that it would "clean the air". I had a negative ion generator and it put all the dirt in the air on my bedroom wall.

thanks for the replies guys. I would definitely agree that it is a very calming glow...maybe not as entrancing or amusing as a lava lamp but I am not completely sold on all the other supposed "benefits".
We will know in a few weeks after my stand is built and everything set back up.

Rock salt (Himalayan, Siberian, Latvian, the junk we spread on icy roads, the stuff that is mined in Neepawa, Manitoba, or the stuff that is mined in Argentina or anywhere else they mine the stuff) doesn’t emit ions of any kind when heated. In order for a crystalline substance to emit negatively (or positiviely) charged ions, the structure has to fundamentally change, but you can’t to that with a 60W bulb or a 500 watt bulb or a 9 watt LED or a CFC of any kind. Physically, it can’t happen. It doesn’t matter if the rock salt comes from the Tibet or Lower Slobovia or the man in the moon, heating it with a light bulb isn’t going to do anything but throw some light and create warm, inedible rock salt.

There aren’t a lot of crystalline salt structures that can change sufficiently, or at all, under moderate heat from any light bulb in the confines of your living room or listening room. None of the crystalline substances that can be changed by the application of a lot of direct heat - e.g., Lithium Tantalate - are anything you want to have in a home occupied by actual humans. The heat needed to generate ions from the lithium salt would kill you.

So . . . complete bunk.

UPDATE: I have had my salt lamp set up beside my turntable for about a week or so...so far no new dust accumulation on the dust cover which is usually a magnet for dust. Also a huge increase in cool ambiance  (note: music room is small [11'x11'] and lamp is on 24/7)
My wife noticed less dust on top of a dark wood dresser that had the lamp on it for the month or so it was on top of...until I relocated said lamp to my music room. (note: wife is a clean freak and owns her own cleaning business)

disclaimer, I have no affiliation with any salt lamp company or related business.
