Kenwood KD-66F. Quartz-locked, direct-drive, linear-tracking tonearm. Patched it into the upstairs main-rig in the livingroom, as kids who came over for my daughter's birthday-cake-inhaling-feast almost destroyed my Luxman PD-284. Almost.
So after I changed my underpants, I decided to swap in the Kenwood to prevent me from a repeat soiling. Slapped an LP Gear elliptical into an AT3472P & mounted it into the oh-so-simple tonearm & voila: an astonishing combination of fidelity & brute force bass-slam that is to say the least, surprising. I posted nearly 5 years to the day ago about how great this cheap-ass turntable sounds. Glad I kept it...

There's the man, back again!

Welcome back brother.
I like that Kenwood - sometimes simple is the way to go.

Well, here I go again... Ladies & gents I present to you the JVC QL-7. Fully-manual, quartz-locked, direct-drive, 25 pound beastie. Paid a whopping $19.99 at the local ValueVillage. Had 30 years of grime on it & was missing 2 feet, the counterweight and the dust-cover.
But once cleaned-up & dialed-in this black beauty sings like a bird & thunders like a prairie summer storm. And that is sweet, sweet candy...

I hear ya man, $19.99 is insane. Speaking of insane, the combo of the QL-7 & the AudioTechnica ATP-3 cartridge is insane. Crystal clarity, huge soundstage & absolutely subterranean bass. Yet the bass seems faster & cleaner than any other table I've had. Wicked...

Well that's the thing. I was actually at ValueVillage to return a digital camera I bought there the previous day for my daughter. "No refunds" they say "only exchanges". So off I go to look for another camera. And there sits the QL-7, all broken-looking & dirty, right next to the pile of cameras. Couldn't believe my eyes...

I hope this question does not compromise the spirit of this thread, but as a “belt drive” guy what does a DD do differently that you prefer it? I don’t mean this as an attack it is more of a case that I have zero DD experience to draw on having always ended up with a belt drive for one reason or another.

It has torque and torque is not bad, it's good.

Got mine a number of years ago from a fellow in Northern Manitoba. I swear the carton it was shipped in looked more like a paper bag than a box!

It got to me without a problem though. :? Paid way more than you but I can't remember exactly, but was way more than $19.99 something like $250 but I am happy with the table. :)

Cheers!

Good score for sure !! I recently picked up a Denon DP1200 and have been using it steady since then , giving the belt drives a break . It is very easy and quick to use with auto lift at end of side :D

Hey Rusty, was it hard for you to find a counterweight?

Well, since this thread has got some new life, I'll help it along a bit..
It's not the $19.99 vintage find that Old Rusty snagged, but I'm pretty chuffed about my new SL1200"G" 8) Without a doubt it's the finest variant on a 1200 I've EVER heard. Currently have my Ortofon 2M-Black on it, but I suspect a Hana SL will end up hanging on the end of it soon...
Will add some more pix down the road.
