Seems fair, but I still do wonder why we are wedded to a free listing model. Revenue from classified ads supported newspapers hugely for decades. The scale of listing transactions on a good web-site is another order of magnitude larger than newspaper classifieds. CAM seems to get about 200 new equipment listings a day and at even $1 per item - well we can all do the math.

My "back of the napkin" math tells me that charging for listing ads won't work for a variety of reasons. One is that some people will see no value in paying for the service and will just go elsewhere. The other is the fact it will play into the hands of those who accuse CAM of greed and trying to gouge users. There is already a paid listing service for hifi, and they too have ads, though they have far fewer. That tells me in their revenue blend they can rely more on fees and less on ads, while CAM is the other way around. Meanwhile, it is my personal desire to keep the site free for casual users. I like the concept and I like the model, I believe in it and I feel good about providing this service like this. I also don't see a need for both us and Agon to use the exact same business models. Let them do their thing and let us try ours.

I would not rate ads as more intrusive than a required fee for using the site, and given the same choice on all the sites I use, for most I would rather see the ads than pay to use the site, and for some I'd rather pay for the site. I suspect others feel the same way.

There are lots of web-sites now with dead links. I just reinstalled a ton of software on one of my laptops and I was surprised at how many formerly active developer sites are now defunct. We just can't let something like this happen to CAM.

Yes, unfortunately many sites I used to frequent have gone away now. I speak to some webmasters, it is just easier for them to fold up shop and do something else. Sites can be a very rewarding thing to work on, but they require a certain mindset, skillset, and diligence, and it is a very competitive landscape (I guess pretty much any operation whether offline or online has a lot of similar challenges). CAM has been very lucky over the years, and we have a pretty balanced model right now that I believe can survive for some years yet. We will continue to work hard on the site, keep a close eye on viability, plan for the future and ensure it works for everyone for the long term.

Edit - it occurs to me that Agon relying on more fees results in them being criticized more for fees, CAM relying more on ads results in us getting more complaints about ads. I think switching from one model to the other just swaps one dislike for another :P.

I have to say that I would use that app all the time!

The ads are unobtrusive, they provide a means for me to enjoy the site (for which I am grateful) and if my life continues on its current trend, I may just click on the ad to meet my new Russian wife.

Hi,

Note to admin.

Rock on - but if there are signs of stress don't hesitate to canvas the users. Over and out.

Cheers,
David Neice

CAM is something I frequent daily. As a buyer, a seller and as a general sh!t disturber in the forums.

Going premium has crossed my mind numerous times but for myself I don't think I'd use what it offers.
That and I'm cheap lol!

From what I gather there's commercial for $150 and premium for $50.

Why not something for us shall we call "regular" users? Say $25 annually?

Keep the quota the same but say give us maybe a couple more ad listings and a nifty icon to highlight those of us who are willing to help out.

I dunno...just drinkin n thinkin....

Personally, I believe we should be able to buy & sell stuff here without being confronted by the evil spectre of capitalism

And in the spirit of inclusiveness - 'Advertising in Forums ... Halal ?'

It's like a bunch of ships trying to outrun an ever advancing tsunami of human dissatisfaction with trends in commercialism. Ie the parasite thinking it is more vital than the host and demanding total control of all host function and flow... as a god given right (each succeeding generation feeling more and more entitled). The host struggles.

Canuck audio is doing well, while other ships are too far back in the wave of froth, and are going down or looking like they are going to capsize.

A good example of being on the verge of going down, is that these questions are in serious need to be discussed at the audiogon site. There, you can't start a thread on any subject of such a nature. They even have a click point in their 'report a post' app, that specifically states reporting the post for 'talking about audiogon'. Any mention of any issue of any kind involving audiogon, is strictly forbidden and all threads of such nature are squashed in the first post. To add, there is no way that I know of to find and talk to the ownership of the audiogon site. All those avenues are blocked. You can send them a message. If a call is to be set up, they'll call you, when they want, if you give them a phone number. I get better service from best buy, who are far from the best in this worse category. It's like freight-training and burning down your customers and user base with directed prejudice....has become the norm for commercial enterprise.

Do you see canuck doing that? the answer is no.

So one has to do their best to not come at Canuck like it is one of those malevolent parasite forces (which are getting worse and more prevalent every day) that are now the norm in the commercial world.

Hi,

And let's try to keep it that way. But it isn't going to be a cake-walk. Large-scale commercial forces are now at hurricane force on the web and the last shreds of public civility are in rapid decline, both on and off-line. Constant vigilance is required.

Cheers,
David Neice

In the business that I had, I also struggled with the concept and usefulness of developing a sense of ownership within the customers. As here, they came, partook, and stayed (a marina). My experiments and endeavors worked for a while, however, once familiarity set in, the issues caused were overwhelming.

This is someone else's vision and business, not ours. We have nothing else invested but our time, and presence. In CAM's model we (the recipients) have gain without risk or cost (or VERY little).

There are three potential answers to the comments:
Polite: Thank you for your comments, I'll take them under advisement.
Blunt: No; why do you ask?
Final lashing out in frustration; #@$"&%
We are lucky that up to this point we've only been shown Polite.
