What a difference!
Was researching my Jadis Ja 80's last night and came across the recommendation to remove the tube cages, guys on A-Gon were saying it was a huge difference and, well..... Surprisingly it is! Night and Day almost!
So much so I removed the cage from the Jp 80 Mc as well.
I love free upgrades

Nothing should be kept in a cage let alone tubes. Besides, much nicer to see them considering how much they can cost.

Just keep the cage for my Sonic Frontiers Power-1 handy in case someone clumsy comes around to visit. Had to stop letting the neighbour's cat in once I got my Magnepan 1.7i's after Christmas. I've seen those beady little eyes light up when he sees something new and interesting. Oh, the trials, tribulations and decisions one has to make for audio bliss. Does it ever end?

Hi,
Question for you, are they your first Magnepan, reason I'am asking, I've the 1.6QR, and was wondering if you upgraded from the 1.6QR, and how different are they from each other.
Thanks

Can some one explain to me why it makes a difference removing the cages?

Tony

Tubes are literally mechanically producing sound, or at least - distortions. The innards are producing the differentials that become the signal. the innards are physically extant in a 3d space. Those innards are physically sensitive to noise, acoustical or mechanical. As the acoustical will translate (some of it) to mechanical noise.

Plus the cage is vibrating in a non-linear manner, besides being a horn-like capture and concentration point for the acoustic noise.

Some of the problem goes away when removing the given large tube cage. One hears this small difference in signal as a net gain in clarity.

Open up old tube oscilloscope gear and you will see suspension sockets for critical tubes. It is a known problem and the cure is also known.
