Have opportunity to acquire a large quantity of vacuum tubes. Can anyone tell if these are tubes used in audio hifi gear or guitar / bass amplification. I'm familiar with brands like Tung-Sol, JJs and 6L6, 6V6, 12AX7 etc...since I own several guitar tube amps, but don't really see anything I can use and don't want to take these on unless I can use or resale.

Based on the shape of those boxes, very few of those would be NOS and more probably well used or used pulls. I would venture to guess that most are TV tubes rather than Audio tubes. Unless you have some esoteric (oddball design) vintage tube amps that require some of those specific tubes and access to a well calibrated tube tester and lots of time, I would pass unless you could get the whole lot for real cheap (under $100).

Thanks OBI56. I think for the most part they are NOS but have been siting in a basement for many years, but you could be right.
I'm seeing some 12AX and other pre-amp tubes that my be of use. But think you're right most seem to be TV tubes.

I don't see anything useful for audio, at least high end audio. Based on the boxes, nothing newer than 1970s and much older for TV and radio. Some potentiometers there, didn't see any power tubes I'm familiar with. About 10 years ago I needed new preamp tubes and until they arrived I tried some old philips tubes and they sounded bland. I find that new tubes from a quality manufacturer are the way to go.

There are about 2 dozen or so tubes that are useful for audio, mostly small signal: 6SN7, 6CG7, 6FQ7, 12AT7, 12AU7, 12AV7, 12BH7. There are also some tuner tubes, e.g., 6AU6, 6AL5.

Personally, I would take a pass. As noted above, there are a lot of old TV tubes and not much used in audio circuits.

Price would be everything in this instance, but you may find this website handy for figuring out equivalencies:

I seriously doubt that anything close to 5% of them are NOT NOS. NOS means NEW OLD STOCK which would most definitely NOT be in used, several times opened, tattered old boxes. The vast majority of these are USED, possibly well worn out tubes that would need to be individually tested BEFORE buying. If even 10% of them are true NOS, then it might be worth it.

Like with a perfectly preserved, sealed bottle of 100 year old scotch and an chipped, empty bottle that used to contain the same 100 year old scotch, but missing the cork and that has the label scotch-taped on. Which one has any real value or would you rather own?

see if you can take them on consignment. try to flip them on Craiglist or Kijiji and take 60%. for me, I would leave them alone. I think I saw one 6BM8.

As said above, it looks like some small signal tubes for pre-amps and / or front stages of power amps. Most of them looks to be tubes for TV and for communication gear beyond audio frequency. Very few regulator tubes and virtually no power tubes. I would take a pass on the lot.
