have some 5v4g tubes that seem to work excellent in the amp but when tested on an as-found 9-66 the fuse bulb glows very very dimly... can someone check a tube of their own, or remember from past experience?

The filament current draw is causing the lamp to glow . Some tubes will cause this to happen in a Stark

Hi Holly,
Old thread, hopefully everything tested the same with the new ones. This is perfectly normal with rectifiers. The filiment is two amp with those. A 5U4G has a 3 amp filament - so brighter still.

Hi Bolly,
You have a very good tube tester. Above average in quality and tests transconductance actively (most do a static test). So, one to hold on to.

The AVO was too complicated for what you need it to do.

How do the Hickok testers fair? I have a thankfully now repaired and calibrated 534B I'm a guitarist with a few tube amplifiers and often it's one tube that is an issue but hard to determine which. I have an Orange VT1000 but honestly it doesn't give you anything but green yellow red. It's supposed to provide a matching number for power amp tubes but I find after purchasing new tubes from TAD that they will often not show a match. I felt it was time for a proper tester so I can catalog what I have and get rid of the duds.

Hi muskokagraphics,

Really well, they are the NOS standard in tube testing equipment. Be aware that the Canadian Stark tester (9-66 for example) are made under license from Hickok and are just as good.

These meters measure Dynamic trans-conductance, which is what you want to be measuring. So either one is an excellent decision. I happen to use the 9-66 and have another for backup should the first one develop a problem.
