looks like an ordinary Chinese tube.... the made in china kinda helped too lol!!

seriously tho, cheap Chinese tube with what appears to be an old sonic frontiers logo.

nope...blew up pic - not sf logo. either way no matter who put their label on it, its a Chinese tube.

Built by a Lockheed second tier contractor who subbed the job out a a Chinese firm, who charged 90% less.... and turned the US contractor into a billionare overnight.

On a more serious note, the Canadian Electrohome tubes are not too shabby either. They are like Philips heerlen tubes, as Philips bought the Rogers factory in the Toronto area, back in the day.. and refitted it with the same tube making gear that was in the heerlen factory.

Oh wait. This is 6dj8. I was thinking 12ax7. My bad.

But, by just the looking, that's one screechy looking/sounding 6dj8. Must be a real tooth grinder to listen to. "Is it safe?" (Marathon man)

Hey Binky, I know a couple of guys who prefer those A-frames. They're good. I like them too. But my favourite at the moment is the D-getter Amperex from the 50s.

Was there a point in time when Sonic Frontiers was sourcing tubes from China? I've had a bunch of their gear over the years and always understood they shipped with Sovtec tubes from the factory, and those were not branded for SF in any way.

so many good tubes... each with a slightly different tonal characteristic.

years ago had a source in new mexico - all good used equipment pulls. heck some were never used! military, Tektronix... imagine an old abandoned scope with white label amperex gold pins. my first tube pre was an sfl1, jumped for the 6dj8. rolling a single tube was a blast! no pairs or quads or.... stray singles scooped on the cheap : )

but I think those days are gone...
