So I bought a pair of tubes for my phono pre.
Now I'm looking at tubes for my line pre
This is bad, I think I'm getting out of control.
It's only the beginning, right?

You have no idea on how deep of a rabbit hole your diving into.
Tubes are warm like snatch. But somehow they are all a little bit different.
That's what keeps it interesting.
Continue your quest, you will be rewarded.

I've tried a few 12AX7's in the Artemis Labs phono i use and although I liked Gold Lions and they were reasonable, I thought they lacked drive, but found satisfaction with a pair of Mullards, Blackburns, I think. The Gold Lions were definitely not bright, so maybe they'd work for you.

I've tried loads of 12ax7's but mostly NOS as I've found I can't yet beat them with a new production tube.Tube descriptions are a good general guideline but you never know how its going to react in your circuit and what kind of sound you are trying to achieve.Having said this JJ's (short plate gold pin) are a really nice new production tube that could work in your Jolida. They might be described as warmer than neutral and they are also a quiet tube. When dealing with tube phono stages please pay the extra money to have your tubes screened for noise..

I guess NOS Amperex could be a good choice as they are smooth sounding but I don't know if they would tame a bright circuit.I just don't like the Amperex sound. The usual warmer NOS suspects are Brimar and Mullard they can be had here in Canada for $150 US a pair..In the past I've given negative feedback about the warmer British tubes but have found if I use them in a circuit in combination with some Telefunkens the results are my favourite.
