Ok here we go..... My rig consists of Cambridge Audio transport, Peachtree Audio dac, Van Alstine SS preamp, Audioquest hyperlitz speaker cables and diy silver wire interconnects. All of this into my 12 year old Cain and Cain Abbys.( single 6" driver) My" reference" amp is a 50`s or 60`s Magnavox 9302 el84 tube set up. Nos GE el84`s, nos RCA rectifier and Baldwin 12ax7`s. All the resistors, caps and power supply were redone, Cardas solid copper binding posts and new RCA`s. It`s my dream come true. At first try the MP was a letdown compared to the Magnavox. No bass, imaging or sound stage. It didn`t let me "see" into the recording at all. I bought NOS National 6v6`s and glass Sylvania 6sj7`s and that helped quite a lot. The changes were removing the 2 small caps, ( big improvement right there) replacing the 4- .22uf coupling caps with .33uf Obbliggato gold premium and replacing the 2 big electrolytics with 390uf. Although I had trouble along the way ( a broken trace which took forever to find) I`m glad I did the mod. The bass is now much deeper and dynamic, the soundstage and imaging are great and I now have a useful volume control. 6 hours of running is not much I know but she`s now even or almost even with the Magnavox. I imagine things will only improve. Thanks to all on this board , especially Peter for making it all possible. Looking back I think I would have used .33uf orange drops instead of the Obbligattos. Way cheaper and they sound glorious in the Maggie. Thanks guys, give me your thoughts.
