It's looking like Ring due to their proximity. The thing weighs 100 lbs! The original Marantz dealer just a block away closed some time ago. Ring is west of Broadview around Queen. No feedback on Radio Service Lab or Bay Bloor

Ring is EAST of Broadview and south of Queen. It's just north of Lakeshore Ave on Carlaw ave

17 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto, ON M4M 2R7
(416) 693-7464

Outside of Ring Audio the east end is pretty bare for options for people who do not drive and can't just whip out to Mississauga or Etobicoke. If I had the option (don't drive and live in east end Beaches area)I would go to Drago based solely on reputation.

I look forward to your feedback on Ring Audio, as I have a couple pieces that could use some work.

They had worked on my Yamaha CR1020. Good work great price.

I want to thank everyone for the advice so far. It's now at Ring and there's a bit of a problem. Seems the main power transformer has an internal short and it's unclear whether it can be repaired and parting outs for 2500s and 2600s are rare. This is not good.

This needs to be saved as there are so few left.

Try contacting Stereo King on Dundas West. He knows Marantz, and can tell you what your options would be.

Good luck!

LOL. If the power transformer is shorted, the option is to buy a new power transformer - most likely nobody makes aftermarket transformers for those beasts (custom would cost more than the whole receiver), so either needs to find parts unit (mission impossible?) or NOS (mission impossible).

Do you know if Marantz used a transformer that is commonly available or not?

If so, mission impossible becomes very possible.

Nothing commonly available, that's for sure.
The 2500 and the 2385 shared the same
specifically designed toroidal- core transformer with dual secondaries
and both were export only.

From the vintage knob,... "Bar the oscilloscope, the Model 2385 is essentially
identical to the Model 2500 and survived it by a couple of years."

Money wise or option wise, a tough find , regardless.

You're right Jimmi.

I checked hifiengine, and the transformer is indeed multi-output -- and it has a selector switch for input power.

As far as I can see, if you are certain of the secondary voltages, you can get it custom made by a transformer maker. I've bought a couple from SumR that work flawlessly.

Maybe contact this guy and see if
1/ he will sell just the spare transformer

2/ if wiring leads are compatible and comparable
to the 2500. I would think they should be.

Thanks Jimmi that's an excellent backup if Erik's source here in Toronto can't make one. Erik, I saw SumR's website and am impressed. I will call him tomorrow to see what he would charge. great tip

Avoid Microland in Markham (company designated to handle Denon repairs after Denon closed its own reairs dept. at Applewood) had a very bad experience with them, they just do not know what they are doing. They even are incapable of carrying out a test procedure as described in a service manual.

Update for anyone interested. Dropped it off to Ring Audio more than three months ago. Supplied a service manual and a set of NOS dial lights. Left $50 deposit. Sourced a main power transformer from Larry Summers. Phone or email every two weeks. Am told progress is being made.

Don't know if that's normal but I've brought few Mcintosh tuners and receiver to Tom (mentioned on the first page) got them back within one week in perfect restored and repaired working condition looking like new . One item needed parts . We waited 3 weeks and that was it. This guy would email me pictures of progress, parts replaced or cleaned. Couldn't do it better . So now you know people . TOM Mcartney is the right guy, many dealers bring units to repair for a reason .

Tom-905-301-3074.
You welcome!

Plus one for me. Honest, straight forward guy. You will be amazed at all the equipment he has in for repairs. Never seen so many Krells in one place.
