This may be old news to some but it caught us off guard. We had a longtime customer of ours asking us to look into Parasound for him and when we emailed Parasound, this is what we got back:

Quote:
Thank you for your email.
Parasound ceased exporting to Canada 3 months ago.
We will not be returning to the market so there is no place in Canada to buy our products.

All warranties will be honored.
Our previous distributor in Canada was supposed to have emailed a letter outlining the situation almost 4 months ago but it appears that you did not receive a copy.

There will be no new Canadian distributor appointed.

Thank you for your interest in our products and I hope that you find a suitable substitute.

Their reply sounds a bit petulant to me.

Translation: "Canadians are mean, and we don't want to play with you any more".

I have owned some Parasound gear in the past. It is OK, but pretty unspectacular.

It sounds more like there was a disagreement with the distributor, rather than Canadians are "mean" IMO.

Other than big home theater installs Parasound has really struggled to maintain a customer base for two channel in Canada so no shock here. But...Parasound has also struggled in the past to make good entry level gear and gear that performs consistently in the high(er) end. I thought the Halo series would change all that as the gear/series is outstanding but I guess sales in Canada aren't enough to keep the product alive here. But good distribution lines in Canada can be a huge problem. Musical Fidelity almost pulled their entire stock out of Canada as well about ten years ago when Kevro was the main distributor for MF products. Kevro was so bad as a distributor it almost cost Canadians MF products from that point forward.

"There will be no new Canadian distributor appointed." ... if it really was just a problem with the distributor, why not simply find a new one rather than flee the country?

Teac's Esoteric division has also pulled out of Canada, but (some) dealers (at least) can order through the American distributor.

My guess is that these companies assigned unrealistic sales targets, and were impatient for results. An American company like Parasound might not have the good sense to understand the size of the market, and that Canadian consumers might not drop to their knees at the sight of their products.

Its also gotta be a double edge sword for a lot of brands when Canadians can easily see the lower U.S. prices which are simply not possible for a canadian dealer to match. In the end fighting for a small piece of an extremely small pie probably just isn't worth the hassle for a lot of brands. It's too bad as I thought parasound made good quality mid fi stuff but its a tough sell in Canada.

Not the way Kevro tells the story.

A legitimate question. We are both guessing as to what happened. I can say there are fewer distributors than there used to be, just as there are fewer people buying stereo equipment. Maybe they could not find anyone to take it on or it may be as others indicate, Parasound has unrealistic expectations, so distributors say "no thanks".

just curious, does anyone know if American co's typically front stock or do distributers pay anything up front? If they front stock, I could see it being tricky to collect from some distributers?!...

Not only that, but i'd imagine Parasound would demand they take xxx amount of inventory as well.
