Hi All

Back from the grave, ages since I posted.

I've moved into car audio the last couple of years and am in need of subwoofer recommendations

Current Setup - Car Dynamated to the nines. Mazda MX6 Gen2

- Kenwood Kiv-700 HU
- Kenwood excelon XR4-S amp
- Alpine MRP-M500 monoblock
- Boston Acoustics SR50 components (front)
- Alpine Type R 6x9 rears
- Sealed Pioneer Champion 12" 4OHM Dual coil sub @ 2ohms (Bassworx box)

My ear is heavily tuned to my home system B&W ASW1000 sub, so I know that I may have slightly unrealistic wants in a car sub. But I can compromise :)

I would like to have a 12" sub (Dual or single coil) that has nice clean smooth lows. I find that the pioneer doesn't quite do it.

I've heavily fought the idea of using the EQ on the deck or the alpine to boost particular frequencies. Should I reconsider?

I've also toyed with the idea of, nicely, cutting a six inch hole in the middle of the rear deck to allow the lower frequencies through from the trunk. Sub does sound better when the back seats are down, just don't care to have them down all the time.

What do you think of me paying someone to tune the existing, or even a new sub?

I would recommend JL Audio, I used to have a W6 and I thought it was fantastic for the size (mine was a 10) and sounded great in a small sealed box. Tons of tight bass with good punch.

I had a few others including an RE 12in and and Alpine Type R 12 but nothing was ever as good as that W6.

An Infinity Perfect 12 might fit the bill. Tough to find, but excellent sq subs for the money. I'm not suggesting better than the top end JL's, but much less money.

Your subwoofer is fine for your setup, in my opinion you are looking in the wrong area.

You need a better subwoofer amplifier, you are underpowered, especially for a sealed box.

Upgrading your subwoofer will probably make it sound worse, or damage it due to being underpowered

If you upgrade the amp get one with a good built in sub eq to get them down low enough to play with the open box subs only cleaner.
