Wondering if you guys out there are as picky with your car system as you are with your home system. I know I am and audio quality is an integral part of my car buying decision (that is when cars are not aftermarket system friendly...). On my top 3 of car audio I owned: Acura ELS, BMW Logic 7 and McIntosh (Subaru). You?

I have an 04 Acura TL, the first year for ELS system. It was reviewed in Stereophile or Absolue Sound, and considered to be the best sounding car system at the time. (when using DVD-A). When I was in my early 30's I had a competition system in my 92 Vigor. I competed in the Amateur 150-300 Watt division in IASCA (International Auto Sound Challenge Association) when sound quality was the key as opposed to video as it seems to be now. I placed first in my class in a competition in Winnipeg, and second in a North/West U.S. Western Canada regional event in Edmonton. In that event, I came in second to the 2 time World Champion who I had read about in the magazines. I was very proud of that accomplishment. I didn't do the installation myself because I don't have the skills, but I did assist in the design and chose all the components. So yes, sound quality in my car is important to me.

I usually listen to talk radio in the car.

Old School audio is still better than most digital crap and is of audiophile quality.I believe most audiophiles can be split into either home or car.But we appreciate both.

I have been using Alpine deck's and speakers in all my vehicles and they work great :D

Used to be... maybe because the car systems used to be crap, or I used to have crap vehicles. Replaced with Alpine systems usually. Last two cars (BMW 3 series) just left the stock systems, augmented with CD Magazine player and now an iPOD dock connector.

Car audio just doesn't do much for me. Too much other stuff going on - you know, driving, street noise, honking etc. I mean I enjoy good sound quality in the car but no serious listening goes on there. No matter how good a car audio system is it can't transport me the way high quality home audio can.

Like marc mc, I often end up listening to talk radio in the car.

+1
when I was younger I used to upgrade but these days the car systems are decent IMHO. I been leaving stock in for a while, currently enjoying my 2007 tls stock system.

If find now that driving distracts my listening - keeping my eyes open, throttle and brake in steady position, hands on the wheel.... In the 80s I did embelesh my vehicles with systems consisting of Alpine decks & Canton speakers, back then I would find myself a beach where I could park, roll-up some stink, and "listen" to tunes. :P

Stock in my pilot touring, fostex speakers( 10 of em!) and , i believe, Pioneer head unit. Had a hard drive for digital playback which sounds superior to the CD player. Sounds pretty good but it isnt audiofile.

An Alpine deck for me too with Infinity speakers. Sounds okay but could use a sub.

Mark Levinson - sounds better than most home 'stereos' I've heard.

While I would like to have a "high end" car stereo, there are several reasons I won't.
1) Too much else going on when driving
2) Road noise drowns out stereo...even a Lexus has around 70dB of road noise
3) Tempting for thieves to steal
4) With only so much money to spend, why not buy "go fast" parts? For example, Cold Air Intake, heavy duty anti-sway bars, etc.

I collect some vintage car audio amplifiers, and have a nice lil system in 1 of my cars.
