...Guys...a comedy-noir set in 1977 L.A. starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as P.I.s who bumble and fumble their way around and through a murder mystery...though not a "laugh a minute", it is absolutely hilarious in many spots while also managing to keep hold of a dark edge that pays homage to 70's genre film and 70's pop-culture more broadly...topped-off with a great period soundtrack... 3 smiley faces outta 5 :D :D :D

The trailers for this looked pretty good. I think it'll be worth a rental.

Funny you should mention this today. I received a free on demand rental from Bell and this film will be the choice I make. Look forward to viewing it.

I so wanted to watch this...but cannot stand Ryan Gosling...been burned too many times in the past with his boring bland delivery style...

Was it good enough despite him being in it?

I loved Drive... Ryan Gosling is a special kind of actor. This is coming from a guy who had to endure growing up with him on "Breaker High"

I will have to check this one out. I like the film noir style... has anyone seen Inherent Vice? Very weird flick, but good.

Loved Inherent Vice...Thomas Pynchon's writing is not easily translated to film...they did a great job with I.V....The Nice Guys is stylistically similar... :D

Yeah, apparently adapting his writing has been a major barrier to seeing many adaptations. Perhaps for the best - encourage more readers out there.

I loved the aesthetic of Drive... very 1980's art direction, Miami Vice like vibes, great new retro 80's score. I believe it deviates a little from the novel it is based upon, but Gosling plays the part stone cold and with little dialogue if any in some scenes.

I will wait for your assessment...Drive was the nail in the coffin for me...just could not watch Ryan un-emote his way through that movie.

To each his own i guess!

We just watched this the other night, and I was saying to my gf that you could clearly see the difference between the skills of Gosling and Crowe. Russell Crowe can clearly act pretty much anything you put in front of him. Ryan Gosling, not so much. He was bearable I suppose, but he just seems unfunny, even though he has funny lines - is it timing, delivery, or what? Heck, I dunno :)
Good movie overall though.

Wait, what, you had to? You had no other possible choice?!? :)

...for me the difference between the 2 leads is not acting ability (though Crowe always makes his work seem effortless) but the characters themselves....Healy (Crowe) is always authentic...March (Gosling) is (almost) always acting...he's the con/comedian to Crowe's "straight-man"...the classic "buddy" combo...circa 1977... :D

Oh...watched it again last night...amending my score to 4 outta 5 smiley faces... :D :D :D :D

Super enjoyable. Funny dark tone, doesn't go to far in any points, has a nice vibe. All and all it was entertaining and frankly one of the better films I've seen this year to be entirely honest. We just really like Ryan Gosling here maybe (when he looks like he's always on the verge of crying in Drive is so good) :P

Why you no like Drive??? It's a beautiful film Jared...

...beautiful

Movies are like music. Not everyone will like every movie, actor, director etc...

...but his performance in Drive is nothing to knock. Drive is based on a novel. The character is written as it was in the novel. He portrayed it as such. You probably didn't like the character.
