Just finished watching a rented copy of this film on Blu-ray. Excellent film with some truly stellar acting. Didn't really like the ending. Well, perhaps the ending would have seemed better if it hadn't been the type that has been basically done to death lately in big budget American film.

I loved the soundtrack music, in particular a Jeff Lynne/ELO track called Long Black Road, which was originally included as a bonus track on the Japanese release of the last ELO album Zoom (2001). I had never heard it before. When it is first played near the end of the film I immediately recognized Lynne's unmistakable voice and incorrectly, but understandably assumed that this was a new track written and recoded by Lynne specifically for the film.

Zoom, while carrying the ELO moniker, was in reality just a Jeff Lynne solo album. On it's own it wasn't a terrible record, it had some moments, but it was certainly not up to the standard set by earlier ELO albums, but if the domestic release, nay, if all of the original versions of Zoom had included this amazing song perhaps the record would have done much better. This track can go toe to toe with any classic ELO track and stand it's ground.

It's baffling to me why this track wasn't heavily promoted back in 2001 when Zoom was released.

This flick is next for me. Have it at home and just waiting to watch now. Should be good.

Every scene in this movie is great. As a whole it is "out-of-the-park" good. Performances are stunning!

I wish I had not watched more than the first 1/2 hour. After all the hype, I kept waiting for something to happen. Still waiting

Yes, good idea. My bad. I hadn't noticed that there was already a thread about this film before creating this one.

In all fairness however, my post was more about the ELO song than the film specifically.

I enjoyed Christian Bale's performance and the soundtrack but otherwise I found the movie to be way over hyped for what it was. I'll take Boogie Nights and Casino over it any day. I think David O. Russell has done stronger films.

The wife and I watched this. She lasted for just over 30 minutes before she moved on to something else and I managed to make it to the end with a little bit of fast forwarding along the way. I honestly thought it was one of the worst I have seen in a long, long time. Do not get what all the fuss is about at all. I should have known going in that I would not like it as movies that tend to get "critically acclaimed" are normally the ones I don't like.

To each their own however.

I did however enjoy the not very well known movie Snowpiercer. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706620/

I'm always curious how many people watch movies with the lens of moral judgement between the screen and their mind's eye...that'll sabotage the experience by short circuiting any potential for transformation...rendering analysis moot...self-reflection self-fulfilling...I ask this as a generalized query...not aimed at anyone in particular...

I'm certain this happens, but I would be willing to wager that most people wouldn't be able to realize it as it's most likely a subconscious thing.

Fair response...I studied some film and critical analysis at uni...it is decidedly not easy (how to "turn down" your world view and operating values?)...but well worth it to remove or mute that lens when engaging any art...Cheers!

I either like a movie or don't. I try not to over analyze things. If it keeps me engaged and interested, then I'm good. If it doesn't, I'll shut it off.
