...watchin' True Detective?...the HBO crime series set in the deep south starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey...it's very good.

Awesome, another HBO hit. I wonder how many episodes in before Cohle gets mixed up with Hart's wife....

I am just going to start watching it "On Demand", as I am concentrating on "Shameless" season 4.
Matthew McConaughey is the best actor out there in these times. He can play any part. If you like his acting check out a movie made about a year ago called "Killer Joe". Matthew at his best. :!:

He's also very good in Mud...it's showing now (in rotation) on Movie Central...think Stand By Me without the sappy romanticism.

I highly anticipate this show...

... but Matthew McConaughey is not "the best actor out there in these times". His good films where hes got a good role, he really delivers and has great chops, but has done some stinkers, and always plays a southerner so saying "he can play any part" may be a stretch to some extent.

Mortron I agree with you re McConaughey...but would tease out this...though he pretty much gets cast as, and is best at, portraying "southerners" in the past few years he has demonstrated a capacity to portray deep and complex characterizations, that go beyond "place" and "culture"...and into the heart of the human condition...his professional transformation has been stunning!...and I can sill watch him in Dazed & Confused and laugh my *ss off... :D

I have to agree that McConaughey is really nailing it in this role. He brings a special intensity to the screen and Harrelson, excellent as always, is having a tough time matching him scene for scene.

The show will continue next season with a new set of actors so these 2 are essentially pulling out all the stops and throwing everything they've got into these episodes and it shows. I see Emmys' and Emmy nominations in their future.

Without a doubt, this is HBOs' best show since The Sopranos'.

Jonesy...I bet Woody and Mat had a fist fight over who'd play the darker role

If not a fistfight, at the very least a heated discussion over some adult beverages and some combustibles.

Harrelson has played bad guys before but I have a tough time seeing him in McConaugheys' role on this show. I think they got the casting exactly right.

You nailed it on the head Stone. "a capacity to portray deep and complex characterizations" is what makes him a Great actor.
Another movie that shows this aspect is "The Paper Boy".

Sorry if I went off topic.

I too am very excited about the prospect of this show. After a mere 3 episodes things are looking pretty good however I am no where close to calling it HBO's best show since The Sopranos. Personally I think Boardwalk Empire has been as strong if not consistently stronger than The Sopranos and Game of Thrones is fantastic as well.

Things are aligning with this one. Very intriguing story with excellent acting, great music, and awesome intro credits. A single writer/director is also a very unique aspect of this show.

So far so good.

Shameless is about the best thing airing on american television now (The always clever Nathan For You and The Eric Andre Show aren't back yet).
I like it because its essentially Arrested Development meets It's Always Sunny but with ridiculously better character writing.

Also we caught the pilot to this a few months back.. its awesome, very cinematic. Gonna hold off a few weeks till theres a nice collection of episodes to binge through.
