im interested to buy one of these ,has anyone heard them back to back or have a opinion on the matter? intended use is vinyl ,with a vip scout 2 ,a yamaha as1100 integrated amp and a ifi iphono preamp thanks for your input

Both have their charms but I'd go with the KEF. Don't limit yourself to the cookie cutter brands there are many great speakers out there new and used. Get out there and demo if possible!

Either choice will need a medium to large listening room - otherwise the bass will be excessive. If you step back from the full range towers you can get a higher quality bookshelf speaker for the same money. Of course, if you have a big room to fill with sound, that's not going to work. I take it you favour rock music?

I've had both and the KEFs are better in everyway as far as I'm concerned. The 85's are bright and have zero depth and they have bass that is tight but very much like a one note sub. The kefs are smooth and natural with depth and some of the nicest bass I've had in my room. It's so defined and each bass note is truly unique.
