Manufacturing processes for coloured vinyl and picture discs are very different. At least when I was making them.

For Picture discs, vinyl is the substrate. A 12' label is used for the picture and these are sandwiched between 2 sheets of Mylar. Acrylics are see through and the reason they are used for picture discs. Acrylics are not desirable for record production as they are too brittle and do not flow very easily. This is the main reason that the sound quality was less than acceptable. A good pressing was one that had no splits in the picture, not easy to do. I actually don't remember ever taking one to the sound booth for a QC check. These were also pressed on old manual presses as the automated machines had no way of introducing the Mylar sheets. I made a few custom picture discs back when, such as a copy of DSOM with 3 - 1 dollar bills. We would screw around with all kinds of pictures on the afternoon shift. Made a bunch of these:

This is one of the few pic discs in my collection...and yes I'd rather look at it than listen to it. 8)

HifiJones beat me to it. Here is another that sounds just fine to my ears and easy on the eyes as well. I have both volumes and I really do like the funky grooves they play. Very relaxing and now I need a smoke.

My Deep Purple The Book Of Taliesyn by Tetragrammatron Records is actually deep purple. So deep that I actually found out by accident when flipping it one day.
Always wondered if they all were issued that way, or if only Tetragrammatron issued it like that, or they only issued a select few. Be easy for a collector to miss this one unless they held it up to a bright light when inspecting it.
