I've had a few in my years but I would have to put "Freak Out" by The Mothers of Invention at the top of my "weirdest album" of all time list. Hearing "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles in August '66 was pretty freakin' strange. No song, and I mean no song ever sounded like that coming over an AM transistor radio that summer ... it was beyond strange.

"Freak Out" was released a little over a month earlier than The Beatles "Revolver" on the jazz label Verve. A couple of months later, a friend at school somehow heard it ... probable through a friend from Cucamonga, Frank's old stompin' ground. He brought it over to my place for a listen.

If any of you out there in CAM-land have heard this album you will have to admit ... that hearing "Help I'm a Rock", "Who Are The Brain Police" or "Return of the Son of The Monster Magnet" was so off the charts weird in '66.... well, I guess ya just had to be there.

My parents said ... "That music will corrupt your mind!".

When I look back on it now I realize the wisdom in my parents words.

Time to dig it out! Though, I know it's sometimes difficult to think of "music" when you hear the Residents. :) Yellow and Snakefinger were much more accessible.

Ralph Records. Suddenly I'm back in my teens! :D

friend of mine who is a big FrankZ fan always described this as Frank's night club lounge LP - conventional, approachable & full of comic kitsch.

Does anybody else recall Roger Waters' "Music from the Body"?
