One of the most under-rated bands of the 70s UFO also has maybe the greatest live album ever , but few are familiar with it . I encourage all to give a listen to UFO s Strangers in the Night . After you catch your breath let me know how you liked it

+1 on UFO and while not recorded as well I will add a huge thumbs up to The Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes Which oddly enough I was playing yesterday. These two albums are like brothers and between Micheal Schenker (UFO) and Ulrich Roth (Scorpions) you have some of the best lead rock guitar playing ever.

King Curtis / Live at Filmore West
BB King / Live at the Regal
Neil Young / Live Rust (of course)

All fabulous albums.

Have heard (but do not have) that Motorhead's "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" is an amazing live album.

As a rule though, I find live recordings to be entirely underwhelming in their production.

Yep, that's the problem.

+1 for Hendrix (Band of Gypsys) and Wes (pretty much anything of his that doesn't have a string section!)

What about "live in the studio" recordings? Why do we need a big slobbering crowd for it to be good?

Song remains the Same and Seconds Out were studio-live albums. Much redone in studios , especially Song Remains the Same.Even a lot of the movie live on stage scenes were recreated in a studio with no crowd.
