A few years back, I ordered a large cd set of baroque operas directly from the label via amazon. A week later, they sent me an email explaining they could not send the set to me because of regional restrictions and provided me with a full refund as well as a link for the North American distributor. The price was double the original price, so I passed on it. Three weeks later, the set arrived on the doorstep with $25 due for HST: so about $180 worth of cds for free, just pay the taxes.

I wish car dealers would have that kind of sale.

A sealed new Santana Abraxas (MFSL gold CD) at a CD store in Cedar Rapids Iowa in the early 1990's. Cost me about 15.00 CAD.

I don't think they knew what it was...

The regulars that frequent it will hate me for this. In Calgary, go to the Brentwood Villiage mall. Inside, past the starbucks there is a CD trader. Most of the CDs are 1.99$. I used to go once a month and look for rounded over corner jewel cases. These are SACDs. Picked up several for under $10 each. Probably spent under $250 there over time and purchased about 75 discs if I had to guess. Every time I am back visiting I make the ritual part of the trip.

I have tons of classical CD's (and LP's) and would be interested in swapping. Is this anything that would work on this forum ?

Amazon and thrift stores, mostly. I bought 3 CD's at Goodwill the other day for $3 each. Green Day - greatest hits, Dave Matthews - Crash, and U2 - Boy. All in perfect, scratch free condition. I nabbed some good deals at my local HMV that is closing. Michael Jackson - Thriller was one (for about $4). It's a really great, and well recorded, album...I can't believe I never owned it before now!

Oh, and I found a couple of CD's at an Avondale when I was buying a snack, in a bin near the checkout. AWOL Nation - Megalithic Symphony, and Big Audio Dynamite - Super Hits, $10 for both. Sometimes good deals pop up in the most unlikely of places :D

As for SACD's, I turn to Amazon. Some good deals, and I typically put them in 'saved for later' and see how the price fluctuates.

I do still like to have the physical media, despite ripping all of my CD's to FLAC (computer audio is soooo convenient!)

Deal of the century. Just bought over 200 CDs from a fellow moving away. $40. So far I have listened to 60 discs; every one plays without a problem. I will only keep the "good ones" ie those that I like.....and sell the rest for $4 a piece.....there are over 50 of em still in their wrappers....the fellow worked for a label and they were all freebees to him. All sort of stuff, from YoYo Ma to Notorious BIG.....so lots of variety. How can you just move and decide never to listen to music again? wow!

Just discovered a new resource for used CDs': my local libraries and maybe yours too.

Wilco ~ Sky Blue Sky
Wilco ~ Wilco (The Album)
Tony Rice ~ Night Flyer: The Singer Songwriter Collection

3 for $6.00.

The discs and jewel cases are in NM condition, which I really didn't expect since they have been loaned out previously to patrons that probably don't give a crap about handling/caring for CDs'.

At $2.00 each the prices are fair; same as what Goodwill charges. And the money from the library sales goes to a good cause: keeping the lights on and the doors open.

Libraries will become obsolete at some point in the future..... :?

Hi,

So this week I was in Woodstock Ontario at RecordWorks. They have tons of vinyl and at the very back they have dozens of boxes of CDs, probably about 10,000. People bring in their CDs and they separate out about 10% that they then reprice at around $3 to $5 and then all the rest go to the back into the $1 bins. These include multiple copies of things that are priced higher at the front of the shop. I was looking for something fairly rare and spent three hours reading CD case edges. I went almost blind but I got through the pile and culled out about 50 or so keepers that were in pretty minty shape. I even found one copy of that rarity I was looking for, but the disc looked like it had been hit with a hammer. I went from ecstasy to misery in one minute. Anyway I took the other fifty away plus a new copy of the Loreena McKennit live double album (Toronto and Paris) for 3.99 and the new Colin James acoustic album 'Blue' for 14.99. I also ordered those two Valerie June albums and Doug, the owner, said he would search for another copy for me of that rarity I am after. Next trip down I will be ordeingr Hope Sandovals recent two albums.

Buying CDs right now in the age of ripping and streaming is like buying vinyl twenty years ago. You are never going to get it for less.

Cheers,
David Neice

My best CD deals are always when I buy them from the artist directly.

Then I know they get the maximum $ on the sale.

Which, I hope, helps them pay their bills and encourages them to keep making their music.

I just bought over 400 CD's from an ex A&R guy....he was closing up his home, moving to Huntsville and was not (yes that is NOT!) taking his music with him. The guy must be ill! And I paid ...$40.00. So far I have listened to about 100 discs and am keeping about a quarter of them. some of the keepers:

Rod Stewart "great american songbook" vols 1 and 2
Dominic Troiano
Joe Satriani "The Extremist"
Essential SRV, studio mix
Genesis - various
and on and on.....and a TON of "new country" stuff from the nineties....if anybody is interested, we can make a sweetheart of a deal!

I am exhausted from kicking myself in the pants; he was a major vinyl collector and sold off all 3,000 original LPs for..wait for it....$600 bucks! Yaaagh...... :?
