Fiona Apple;

The Idler Wheel.

I've been a big Fiona Apple fan right from her debut release, Tidal. One messed up, talented lady. I can't put her CD's on when the wife is within earshot though as she hates Apple's music. The new record while different is still uniformly excellent, as usual for Fiona. This is a darker record which lacks the hooks of her previous releases. This may upset, or even alienate some of her fans, but to me this record shows a maturity that is consumate with her age, which will probably mean truncated sales. She's the last person on earth who would care about that. The record company didn't even know that she was recording an album until she presented it to them. None of Apples albums could ever be considered easy listening but given their proper due they are all ultimately, in the end, extremely rewarding. I just wish that she had more than four records in her sixteen year career. She is a unique talent. Not unique enough for my wife, if you know what I mean.

Hey gkella great idea for a thread.
I am a thrift store junkie and usually get a disc a week or so.
Last weekend's pickups;

Tosca "Suzuki", a Kruder & Dorfmeister project.

Asian Travels, a Six Degrees compilation. I have yet to hear a terrible album from http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/home.php.

Little Feat - Rooster Rag
Pretty good sounding cajun-funk-blues. Their first in nine years! With a handful of tunes co-written with Robert Hunter, can't go wrong there.

I've got this one on order as I seem to have 'misplaced' my original copy. Unbelievably well recorded, this one for me is a reference disk.

I also download the rumors 24bit cd from hd tracks.Much better than the original the cd i had.

How do you like the Ron Sexsmith ?
I was very disappointed.
I find it over produced with too much instrumentation that takes away from Ron's performances.
I have seen Ron live a couple of times and I wish he would do in the studio what he does live in terms of arrangements.
I would love to see him do a completely accoustic album.
glen

Hi Glen.I really like this cd but i have nothing to compare it too as i just started to get into Ron sexsmith.I love his voice and i agree it would be nice to hear a acoustic album from him.Your lucky to have seen him live.I just recently seen one of my idols live at the imperial theater(John Prine).I was in awe the hole time. Kevin

I love John Prine as well !!!
Have seen him so many times live, I have lost count.
He is a treasure.

Yeah, John Prine is one my guilty pleasures, so to speak. Mainly got into him when I was trying to learn guitar, since so many of his songs are of the three-chord wonder ilk. But as a songwriter and storyteller with a sense of humor, few artists are better or more fun to listen to.

Wheeled into the downtown HMV store this morning looking for the new Diana Krall and Bob Dylan CDs that have been discussed on here recently and they didn't have either of them in stock. So, being in a good mood, I decided to play a game with the young salesclerk; pretending to be upset, I told him that he had 15 minutes to find me 12 CDs that I didn't already have for under $100 (no classical, heavy metal, rap, hip-hop or country) if he wanted to collect a $20 tip. He came through with some rather surprizing, and so far, pretty enjoyable picks with a few surprizes thrown in for good measure.

Elton John Songs from the East Coast
Sweet Level Headed (the most expensive of the lot and an absolutely horrid recording compared to the original vinyl)
Air Pocket Symphony (the biggest surprize so far)
The Esential Darryl Hall & John Oates
Peter Gabriel So
Herbie Hancock Maiden Voyage
Etta James The Definitive Collection (another great surprize)
Bryan Adams Unplugged
Counting Crows Recording the Sattelites
The Velvet Underground & Nico
Tina Turner Private Dancer
iSelectBowie

Needless to say that he earned his $20 even though he went over the $100 limit by 3 cents!!! Busy weekend of listening ahead.
