I'm trying to expand my musical listening. Raised on metal, listen to blues, jazz, rock, want to try some orchestra type violin, not too formal. Willing to pay fair market price for good quality vinyl [no K-Tel please!] blue note, etc. Thanx for any help,I need some! One other requirement is great soundstaging!

If you're looking for jazz with great soundstage look for labels like Contemporary, Black Lion, Riverside, Steeplechase, Impulse, Atlantic, Columbia and Verve to name a few of the more common labels. Blue Note had great music but for the most part it's sonics were generally middling although there are lots of exceptions.

Orchestral stuff can be really hit and miss. One of the problems with loud orchestral music is that it often tended to require such a high standard of talent and equipment during the recording process such that not many were up to the task. Either the mikes & tape machines weren't up to the task or the cutting & pressings weren't, esp in loud passages. You're better off looking for smaller ensemble recordings. If you must go full orchestra the best I've found were some of the audiophile re-issues like Chesky Records, etc. I have some Nonsuch, London ffrr, Deutche Gramaphone, Harmonia Mundi, Mercury and Columbia albums that sound excellent but I've also just thinned a bunch of lps out of my classical section that don't. Big names on major labels that don't sound that great.

I'd love to claim the elusive bootleg, Genesis Live in Montreal 1974, if anyone has it available.
Cheers!
