Did a quick Google search of this forum without a decent result so I will ask:

Just acquired a DAC and want to start building up some lossless music files on a laptop.

Looking for suggestions of the best places to look for a variety of decent music files.

Analog for the old, digital for the new (ish).

Its very quiet in here .....
If you listen very carefully you may be able to hear someone whisper "A friend with lots of CD's and a Linux box".

Gotcha

Now if people would be so kind enough to share any possible sources other than the obvious piracy via Torrents.

PM if you must!

I'm all set to go now with a DAC and laptop for music only.

even "better" if that friend uses DropBox...

CDBaby.com
Bandcamp.com
ProStudioMasters.com
HDTracks.com
ca.7digital.com
beatport.com

And some of the smaller labels as well, such as https://truenorth.labelstore.ca/

But mostly I rip the physical CD using DBPowerAmp.

If you are paying for music, I like to order used cds off of Amazon instead of paying for a file and it is usually less expensive. Used cds are not like buying second hand vinyl. You only really need them to read once when importing them to your computer and usually they will read fine even if in pretty rough shape. Many used cds I have ordered are basically new.

Ditto for the used CD route, and for ProStudioMasters and CDBaby. Linn Records is one that hasn't been mentioned.

Several labels have their own download sites. Don't know if you're into hi-res files, and if any of them are classical. But in case you are, eclassical.com, hyperion-records.co.uk and Presto Classical are good sources. The first, eclassical, has one or two deal offers per week on hi-res, and a daily special drawn from the entire catalogue.

prostudiomasters.com is my favourite.

They are Canadian and reasonably priced (in CAD!).

Prostudiomasters (for 24 bit) and Tidal (flac streaming).

+1 for Murfee. Buy a CD and download it in flac. Of course if I had no scruples I would suggest your local library CD collection and a piece of ripping software, but of course that would send you straight to hell.

And a visit from the dreaded Copyright Gestapo.

If you're planning to rip CDs using your computer - I recommend you download Exact Audio Copy (EAC) for free.

Wow so much stuff to start.

Thanks everyone.

Funny enough just picked up a laptop to use for my hifi with the DAC but the laptop has no CD Rom drive. I am planning to use my CD player as a reader only. Maybe rip CDs on the desktop in the next room and transfer by USB key when necessary for loaner CDs.
