Take a Raspberry Pi, boot it up with OpenMediaVault OS. Add a USB hard drive and you have a NAS box. Apparently has RAID capability too, but that I have not yet tried. Currently using this to remotely access 1 TB of WAV files on an Aries Streamer.

How come you don't use the Raspberry Pi also as a streamer?
Do you not like the media control (Rune, Volumio) available with it?

I understand outboard DACs can be of better quality vs the Raspberry boards available...

Been there done that. Was a fun project with Volumio and a Dragonfly red, but moved on to the Auralic Aries and Chord combo.

I have the same DAC as you....

What were the shortcomings of using Raspberry Pi as a streamer in your opinion?

I tried that too but my problem with RPi as NAS is that it's slooooow. For streaming music it should be ok but for any other purposes it's too slow for me.

I did find Volumio a little erratic some days, but the main problem was the lack of native Tidal support. I was able to get Tidal streaming to the Raspberry via Bubble Server and Lumin, but that was convoluted and connectivity, even via ethernet was also erratic. Soundwise Volumio was excellent, but for me it was more of a second system level for background listening. I had fun experimenting with it and I think it's an excellent first streamer project for someone who likes to tinker.

I understand Rune integrates well with Tidal. Will try this weekend. Volumio v3 is also supposed to improve connectivity with streaming services: we'll see.
