Hi,

I have an OPPO 105D... So, I'm thinking to buy the Sonica for a 2nd system... or another 105D... I would like to know your impressions about this "new dac".... Vs. your old dacs or the 105, thanks.

I bought one to try a DAC with the ESS ES9038PRO chip (it looked like the most affordable choice). It has been in use for over a week in my main system. The strongest point of the DAC is detail, in this category it compares favorably with anything pricier I have owned in the past. The separation of voices and instruments is very clear and everything has a "wide" sound. So far I have only used the USB input and balanced outputs on the Sonica.

Being unbiased with gear I bring in to evaluate my only complaint so far is I find it a bit bright when partnered with revealing gear. The downside is both speakers I am using and one of the amps are very revealing. I would not bother pairing it with a Focal and class D amp setup for example.

My plan was to use it short term while I decide on a new DAC but it will be staying for a bit longer than anticipated. Overall it is a great value even when paired with more expensive gear.

Luxman L-590A II/Modwright KWI 200

Anyone with the Sonica have medium-term updates on SQ / performance vs the 'usual' incumbents (Sim, W4S, Mytek, etc.)?

Much thanks!

I recently got a Musical Paradise MP-D2 and it is significantly better at a similar price. Not a positive comparison for the Sonica but it is still a great DAC. It did very well against the popular DACs though.

Thanks, James. As always very helpful. MP seems to be the continued value leader....

I worry about the long term build quality. My Chord DACs were built like tanks.

Long term build quality of the MP or the Oppo? I assume you are referring to the MP DAC as Oppo build quality is almost always top notch.
