Don't worry...

If you read thru this thread, you will see that you are not the first person...
To get the various DACs from SHENZHENAUDIO -- 'All Mixed Up'. :D
--
Please let us all know... How the new OPPO Sonica DAC turns out!
Thank-you!

No... This is not quite correct.

The LKS uses 2x (Dual) ESS ES9038PRO SABRE DAC Chipsets.
As of yet... None of the Gustard DAC's even use One (1) of the ESS 'Flagship' DAC Chips.

Whether or not this makes a difference to you... Is of course a different matter -- Altogether.
Thank-you!

@Taki...maybe you misunderstood what I was saying....for $200 or 300$ more I would get the LKS
The LKS isn't that much more money than a Gustard and a Singxer
The LKS is the superior DAC. The Gustard with the ES9038 isn't due out until November

My sincerest apologies. Me bad...
Yes, I 'Completely' misunderstand what you originally said.

Agreed in full 110%.
For the additional $200-$300... I would also get the new L.K.S Audio MH-DA004 DAC --
If it were within one's Budget.

From all preliminary accounts, it appears to be an outstanding DAC for the $$$.

or....

I wonder how the Audio-gd implementation of the dual ES9038 compares.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the LKS isn't $200-$300 more, it's US$630 more (US$1,460 vs US$830)?

It's only that if you compare it to the X20 + Singxer.

Correct.
Both darcman and myself were 'Originally' referring to the Combo:

Gustard @ $840 + Singxer @ $400 = $1240
LKS = $1460

Denafrips Ares R2R DAC for 600$. https://www.vinshineaudio.com/products

There's a long tread at head-fi.org about this dac. It seems to be the DAC to get under 1K. Compared to the Gustard X20U, one owner said: ''Well, the Gustard, unfortunately for me, is less on each parameter to Ares, impractical comparison. "

What i'm curious about is, for the same price, which DAC sound best: LKS 9038 pro or Denafrips Pontus. They are based on two complete different design.

The Denafrips Ares looks promising! Good find!

It looks like a ridiculously good deal. Bookmarking the site in case curiosity gets the best of me.

No. As per previous... It still uses the older ES9028.
Thank-you!

The 9028-PRO is NOT the older one --it has (more/less) just been released with a few other "20", and "30" PRO series by ESS.

The 9018-chip has been around for 7-years ? and is in fact the OLDER one.

Point well taken...

When making the previous 'Differentiation'...
I should have said 'Lesser' -- Not older. Thank-you!

I thought I would post an update to this thread (in case anyone might be interested).

I ended up buying the Gustard x20Pro, mainly in order to mod it. I bought the non-USB version. For USB, I bought the Singxer SU-1 DCC.

I compared this combo straight out-of-the box to my Teac UD-501. Right from the start the Gustard/Singxer revealed much more detail than the Teac on DSD files (Carpenters, and Jazz at the Pawnshop).

Yesterday I added an SBooster power supply board to the Singxer. It's too soon to determine how much (if any) of an improvement this made. I'm expecting it to be subtle.

Without mods, this combo is very impressive. It is certainly a step-up from the Teac (the Teac was a noticeable step-up from my Schitt Bifrost).

For an entry-level DSD DAC, the Teac is still your best bang-for-your-buck DSD DAC under $1,000 (IMHO).

In the $1,000 - $2,000 market however, this combination is a serious contender (admittedly, I haven't heard them all).

My system:

Asus VivoPC (running JRiver MC v.22)/SAN -> [USB] -> Singxer SU-1 -> [I2S] -> Gustard x20 Pro -> [Teo Audio GC] -> Don Sachs Model 1 preamp -> [Teo Audio GC] -> Soundcraftsmen monoblocks -> [16ga wire] -> Martin Logan Spire

*note: cables are denoted in square brackets ([])

Very nice choice of Preamp! :D

Good call on the Singxer, I've found mine to be much better than the Gustard on board USB. I made a number of upgrades to the Singxer which were suggested on the Computer Audiophile forum (better voltage regulators and caps) and found them very worthwhile. I also tamed the popping on signal lock that I was originally experiencing by updating the firmware on the Singxer.
